Job Summary

Oversees the Lifeguard Team, ensures the safety of all guests, and maintains a secure and enjoyable environment at the aquatic facilities. This is a part-time/seasonal position, working approximately 30 - 40 hours per week.  Evenings, weekends, and some holidays are required. 

Essential Job Functions

  1. Supervises and leads a team of lifeguards, providing guidance, training, and supervision.
  2. Conducts regular inspections of the pool area to ensure safety and cleanliness standards are met.
  3. Enforces pool rules, regulations, and emergency procedures and ensures their adherence by the lifeguard team.
  4. Ensures lifeguard's safety and needs are being met on a regular basis by frequently checking in with staff on duty.
  5. Monitors lifeguards to ensure vigilant and effective surveillance of the pool and immediate response to any emergency situations.
  6. Conducts regular staff meetings, drills, and training sessions to maintain readiness and improve team performance.
  7. Assists in resolving conflicts, addressing customer concerns, and provides exceptional customer service.
  8. Completes administrative tasks such as incident reports, maintenance logs, and inventory management.
  9. Collaborates with management to develop and implement safety protocols and procedures.
  10. Performs lifeguard duties, including water rescues, First Aid, CPR & AED, and water surveillance as needed.
  11. Ensures staff and guest safety by supervising the activities on the decks, in the pools, and in the surrounding areas inside the facility.
  12. Informs management of any possible personnel problems and then releases the matter for management to resolve.
  13. Assists management in executing the strategies that will lead them to the achievement of the official goals established by the City of Hurst for the Aquatics Division.
  14. Adheres to Hurst’s Code of Ideals and The Hurst Way. Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.
  15. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are logical and appropriate.
  16. Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
  17. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of water safety, CPR, First Aid, and emergency response procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively lead and supervise a team.
  • Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Proficient swimming skills and capability to perform rescues confidently and effectively.
  • Organizational skills to manage schedules, conduct training sessions, and maintain records.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills and can excel at applying the City of Hurst’s Code of Ideals in all interpersonal relations with city staff and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers. 
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time to operate standard office equipment, including computer keyboard, telephone, calculator, copier, fax machine, and printer.

Minimum Education, Certification, and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum age 16 years.
  • Two (2) or more years previous lifeguard experience preferred, but at least one (1) year is required. 
  • Ellis & Associates ILTP license required; Instructor license preferred. Training will be provided upon employment.
  • Must have regular and punctual attendance, reliable transportation, flexibility to work overtime, evenings, weekends, and some holidays, and respond to emergency situations during non-scheduled work hours.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

This job entails moderate physical labor, which requires strength and agility.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to sit or smell.  The employee must occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to hear guests in emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Ability to swim and perform rescue operations.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time while observing guests or performing administrative duties.
  • Ability to lift and carry persons while performing rescue operations.
  • Ability to orally direct guests and staff, in emergency and non-emergency situations.

Majority of work is performed outdoors and is subject to extreme heat and sun. Work performed is subject to chemical hazards.

Work may be subject to time pressures, emergency situations, frequent changes to tasks, working closely with others as part of a team, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and dealing with difficult persons.
