Job Summary
Responsible for teaching recreational swimming lessons to guests of varying ages and skill levels in a safe and supportive environment. Encourages and promotes participation among students. Ensures the well-being of guests while participating in class. Coordinates daily lessons plans for classes. This is a part-time/seasonal position, working approximately 16 - 30 hours per week. Morning and evening availability is required.
Essential Job Functions
- Plans and conducts swim lessons following established curriculum and teaching methodologies.
- Instructs students in water safety, swimming techniques, and stroke development while encouraging participation.
- Evaluates students’ swimming abilities and progress, providing constructive feedback and guidance for improvement.
- Adapts teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and skill levels.
- Ensures a safe and positive learning environment by enforcing pool rules and safety guidelines.
- Communicates effectively with students and their parents/guardians regarding lesson progress and goals.
- Assists in maintaining accurate student attendance records, skill assessments, and lesson plans.
- Coordinates with other swim instructors and staff to coordinate lesson schedules and activities.
- Participates in all preseason orientations and regular training sessions to enhance teaching techniques and stay updated on safety protocols.
- Adheres to Hurst’s Code of Ideals and The Hurst Way. Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.
- Performs related duties as directed when such duties are logical and appropriate.
- Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
- Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of Jeff Ellis Swimming program.
- Ability to effectively demonstrate and teach required skills. Training will be provided upon employment.
- Ability to interact with participants of all ages.
- Possess excellent customer service skills and can excel at applying the City of Hurst’s Code of Ideals in all interpersonal relations with city staff and the public.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time to operate standard office equipment, including computer keyboard, telephone, calculator, copier, fax machine, and printer.
Minimum Education, Certification, and Experience Requirements
- Minimum age 16 years old.
- Previous experience conducting swim lessons preferred but not required.
- Jeff Ellis Swimming certification is required or ability to obtain before June. Certification and training will be provided upon employment.
- Must have regular and punctual attendance, reliable transportation, flexibility to work days or evenings.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

- Ability to hear guests in emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Ability to swim and demonstrate required skills at each level of the program.
- Ability to stay in the water for extended periods of time while teaching classes.
- Ability to reach, lift and/or carry persons while teaching classes.
Majority of work is performed outdoors and is subject to extreme heat and sun. Work performed is subject to chemical hazards.
Work may be subject to time pressures, emergency situations, frequent changes to tasks, working closely with others as part of a team, working alone 50% or more of the time, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and dealing with difficult persons.
