What are the responsibilities and job description for the IPL- Journeyman Power Plant Mechanic position at City of Independence, Missouri?
Responsible for the installation, adjustment and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment and parts in the power generating plant. Maintains and repairs, pumps, motors, fans and heat exchangers; maintains and repairs turbine generators and auxiliary equipment on oil and gas-fired combustion turbine units. Diagnoses trouble or defects and makes necessary repairs or adjustments working from sketches, blueprints, parts books or broken parts. Participates in general plant maintenance and upkeep. May be called in for emergency or unusual situations during off duty hours. Performs related duties.
Minimum Qualifications : High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years experience in a power plant or other heavy industrial mechanical work within a compatible field, preferably with three (3) years as journeyman mechanic. Must have welder certification or minimum of one year welding experience. Must possess a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. Knowledge and experience maintaining power generation equipment, including fans, pumps, motors, gas compressors, air compressors, gas turbines and all other equipment utilized in a power generating plant. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Skilled in the use of mechanical hand tools and precision measurement equipment; arc and gas welding; gas torch and carbon arc-cutting instruments; rigging and crane operation; operation of back-hoes, skid loaders, and cranes. Knowledge and skill in basic mathematics and mechanical safety. Physical Demands : Work is performed in an industrial setting consisting of both outside and inside tasks. Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, crouch, reach overhead, negotiate stairs and ramps, climb ladders, climb and work from scaffolding and other high platforms. Must be able to lift 100 pounds (plus or minus), stand, work, and maintain balance on hard, narrow and uneven surfaces. Must be able to work in confined areas. Must have good eyesight and hearing. Typical Working Conditions : Industrial environment of smoke, fumes, noise, chemicals, open flames, sparks, rotating machinery, overhead hazards, hot piping / machinery, and airborne pollutants. Both outdoor and indoor conditions of extreme heat and cold.
