What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fire Inspector position at City of Independence?
Interviews will be conducted periodically. To be considered for a Fire Inspector position with the Independence Fire Department, applicants must complete the requirements outlined in the Firefighter Information Packet .
Position summary: Performs duties, in both emergency and non-emergency situations, emergency medical services. Performs inspections, plan review, and enforcement work in promoting fire safety through the application of the fire codes to a variety of commercial and residential buildings and fire safety standards. May be assigned to various support divisions within the Fire Department. Knowledge of Geography of the community and the location of major buildings, International Fire codes and City ordinances, International Building codes and NFPA Fire codes, Fire Alarms, Water-based fire protection systems, and other fire suppression systems, Computer applications related to the work, Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques, Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary. Must be able to successfully complete NIMS 700, 200 and 100 training within 60 days after date of hire. This is an 8 hour shift.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- MO/EMT or MO Paramedic license (Applicants with a valid MO Paramedic license will be given a 5% pay differential.)
- MO State Certified Fire Inspector (must obtain within one (1) year of hire date)
- Valid State Driver’s License
- Background investigation
- Medical examination and drug test
- Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job
- B.S. in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Science, Engineering, Construction Management, or closely related field
- ICC: Plans Examiner and/or Inspector certifications
- NFPA: Certified Fire Protection Specialist and/or Fire Plan Examiner and/or Water-Based Systems Professional
- MO Firefighter I & II Certification (IFSAC or ProBoard)
- MO Fire Inspector I or II Certification (IFSAC or ProBoard)
- MO Fire Investigator Certification (IFSAC or ProBoard)
- Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations Level Certifications (IFSAC or ProBoard)
