Indy-ology Internship

City of Indianapolis and Marion County
City County Building, IN Full Time
POSTED ON 2/14/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/17/2025

Indy-ology, a youth archaeology summer camp program, will center on the excavation of Greenlawn Cemetery, the city’s first cemetery. A portion of the Original Burying Ground (established 1821) and New Burying Ground (established 1830s) are currently being excavated for the City of Indianapolis-Department of Public Works’ Henry Street Bridge project. This 10-week summer camp allows high school students an opportunity to learn more about the field of archaeology through research and lab analysis while uncovering the history of early Indianapolis citizens buried at this cemetery. The City of Indianapolis has an unprecedented opportunity to engage with youth interested in STEM, specifically in archaeology, anthropology, medicine, information science, and forensics. Nationally, but especially locally, these fields lack diversity. Our aim is to create an opportunity for student workforce development and a pipeline to employment with an emphasis on diversifying these fields. The Indy-ology program is looking for high school students who want to gain experience in archival research, genealogy, artifact analysis, archaeology, and osteology, or the study of bones. Through this work, you will join a team of experts trying to reconnect individuals to their names and stories and tell a fuller story about the citizens of Indianapolis.
