POSITION

Under close supervision, maintains, repairs, removes, and replaces traffic signs and traffic markings.

This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.

TASKS
  • Paints crosswalks, stops, curbs, and streets;
  • Performs line striping on streets and parking lots;
  • Install, maintain, and repair raised pavement markers and delineators on roadways;
  • Erect, mount, and install street-level signs and posts, repair damaged signs, and replace damaged posts
  • Install concrete sign foundations, install sign posts and signs in accordance with federal, state, and City codes;
  • Operates a road striper or various city vehicles in the completion of work duties;
  • Maintains inventory of signs at City Sign Shop;
  • Set up traffic safety devices and barricades to control traffic around work sites and special events and ensure safe conditions for the general public and city workers;
  • Enter daily work orders on Department Computerized Maintenance Management System;
  • Receives and completes oral and written instructions of work orders from the supervisor or lead.
  • Respond to after-hour emergencies as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

A high school diploma or equivalent and IMSA (International Municipal Signal Association) certifications in both Work Zone Safety and level one Signs and Markings AND one (1) year experience in commercial painting. Must possess at the time of application and maintain a valid California Driver’s License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
  • Knowledge of traffic control practices and procedures, occupational hazards and safety guidelines, and the use of power and hand tools used in traffic control;
  • Skilled in the safe use of power and hand tools used in traffic control maintenance, in following oral and written instructions, and in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships;
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing in English


THE SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants whose experience best meets the city's needs will be invited to participate in the examination for this position. Candidates must have access to a computer with internet, video, and audio capabilities to participate in our examination process. The examination may consist of one or more of the following: (1) Training & Experience Evaluation, (2) Writing Exercise, and (3) Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a panel of subject matter experts. Candidates must receive a score of 70 or higher to have their names placed on the active eligibility list for one year. The top three ranks on the Eligibility List will have their application materials forwarded to the hiring authority for a selection interview.
