What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Intern position at City of Inver Grove Heights?
The City seeks two Engineering Interns, who will perform a variety of field and office duties in support of the Engineering Division’s operations and goals. These positions are designed to afford undergraduate or technical program students an opportunity to receive a first-hand view of the dynamics of local government. The internship program augments academic training by providing exposure to the various operating departments, field circumstances, engineering and environmental principles, and public interaction that are part of a municipality's daily activities.
Position #1 will have an emphasis on civil engineering and construction-related tasks as it relates to public infrastructure.
Position #2 will have an environmental and storm water emphasis as it relates to the City’s Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System program.

Position #1 Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Construction observation and documentation
- Plan and specification reading and application
- Resident and contractor communication
- Field measurement of contract pay quantities
- Report writing and spreadsheet work
- Erosion and sediment control inspections
- Potential for some AutoCAD drafting
- Potential for use of GIS software
- Related work as required; some overtime and Saturdays may be necessary
Position #2 Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspect municipal stormwater ponds, structures, outfalls, and related best management practices (BMP’s)
- GPS surveying of BMP’s
- Assist with detection and tracking of illicit discharge sources
- Inspect BMP’s for compliance with approved construction and landscaping plans
- Assist in development of water quality improvement projects
- Assist with proactive management of tree diseases and tree removal/replacement initiatives
- Perform related work as required
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school graduate, or equivalent
- Valid, unrestricted driver’s license
- Completion of one year of education in an undergraduate or technical program in civil engineering, environmental resources, construction management, or related field.
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to carry out moderately complex assignments with limited supervision
- Ability to perform the physical demands of the position in uneven terrain
Desirable Qualifications:
- Previous internship or work experience related to municipal engineering and inspections
- Knowledge of principles of urban stormwater management, forestry and land management
- Knowledge of native and non-native plant species identification
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, SWPPPs, contract documents, technical manuals, legal descriptions, easements, written reports and correspondence
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD and GIS software
- Ability to use GPS surveying instruments
Typical Working Environment:
General office setting as well as outdoors on construction sites or near ponds and other storm water infrastructure.
Typical Physical Requirements for this Position:
The employee must be able to work in all kinds of weather from very hot to cold, must be able to walk on rough terrain, and must be able to sit in a vehicle or at a desk for periods of time. Must be able to drive, stoop, kneel, crouch, handle objects, talk, hear, perform near activity, and have depth perception. Must be able to wear and use safety equipment.
