What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Maintenance Worker position at City of Inver Grove Heights?
Under the direction of the Utility Superintendent and guidance of the Utility Lead Worker, the Utility Maintenance Worker is responsible for the maintenance and repair of municipal water supply, water and sewer infrastructure and water treatment plant maintenance activities.
Performs and assists in the maintenance of the water treatment plant equipment, water wells, chemical feed equipment and water storage reservoirs.
- Monitors and checks water consumption.
- Makes adjustments to metering pumps.
- Takes water samples throughout the distribution system to monitor water quality, water flow and chemical inputs.
Performs maintenance on City storm water lift stations and sanitary lift stations.
Performs maintenance on the water distribution system to avoid interruptions of customer service.
Performs sewer maintenance activities. Conducts sewer cleaning to avoid sewer backups. Televises sewers to inspect the integrity of the pipes in the collection system.
Installs, maintains, repairs and/or replaces water meters to accurately monitor water consumption.
Responds to emergency service calls from the general public, Gopher One, police dispatch and/or water treatment plant.
Assists with water and sewer utility locations.
Assists other divisions and/or departments, as needed, during emergency operations or to ensure the safety of the public.
Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.
Requires a minimum of 2 years of directly related experience in utility maintenance and repair; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires a valid driver's license, and the ability to obtain a Class B MN CDL driver's license, or equivalent, within one year, and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 2 years.
Essential Knowledge Required to Perform the Essential Functions of the Job:- Fundamentals of water/wastewater collection and distribution systems.
- Fundamentals of the materials, equipment and operations used in the construction, maintenance and repair of the water treatment plant, water distribution system and equipment including electronics, mechanics and hydraulics.
- Knowledge of the materials, operations and equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of sanitary sewer system.
- Department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of proper safety procedures.
- Local, state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to utility operations.
- Specifications, operating capabilities, and application of equipment, pumps, motors and electrical controls.
- Knowledge of flow monitoring and sampling of water/wastewater.
- Knowledge of all safety rules and regulations related to a water/wastewater operations and activities.
- Collection and recordkeeping requirements and regulations pertaining to job responsibilities.
- Inspecting, monitoring and troubleshooting pumps, meters, controls, repair and maintenance issues/problems in the water and treatment plant, wells, lift stations and equipment.
- Assisting in the recordkeeping and reporting of a variety of required repair, inspection, testing/sampling, treatment, discharge and/or monitoring reports to governmental agencies.
- Communication skills needed to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, contractors and the public.
- Ability to safety operate large equipment involved in the cleaning and jetting of sewer lines.
- Performing mechanical, electrical and preventive maintenance repairs to equipment and systems.
- Operating heavy equipment and equipment used in the removal of snow and ice on roads, as needed.
- Locating utility lines, water mains and services for residential or commercial installations. Utility line tracing and leak detection procedures and processes. Ability to read prints and maps in locating and marking underground utilities.
- Using and operation of business productivity software.
Position requires working in and around chlorine gas, hydrochloric acid, human and industrial wastes; electrical panels and controls; working at heights on water towers during inspections and repairs; working in and around construction sites, moving heavy equipment or operating heavy equipment; working in trenches or confined spaces; working in and around high-speed traffic; in extreme weather conditions, and around high voltage. Responsibilities of the job may involve some occasional disagreeable human interactions.
Physical Job Requirements:
Employee is required to frequently talk, listen, and hear, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and use hands/fingers dexterously; occasionally sits, climbs, stoops, crawls, and knees. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 lbs. frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
