The Public Works & Sustainability Department seeks a dynamic Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent. The Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent will direct, manage, supervise and coordinate the activities and operations of Fleet Maintenance, collaborating closely and building relationships with internal departments. The position will oversee a fleet of vehicles and be responsible for vehicle replacement, maintenance program, contract administration, regulatory compliance and the fleet budget.
This recruitment will establish an eligibility list for this position and may be used to fill future vacancies in similar and/or lower classifications in the organization. The eligibility list will expire on 2/19/2026.
Your Impact
- Plan, direct, and coordinate fleet services, including the service and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, buses, and other gasoline or diesel-powered equipment. Oversee vehicle inspections and repairs, estimate repair costs and time, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for vehicles, generators, and fueling stations.
- Develop long- and short-term plans for fleet maintenance operations, including setting strategic goals that align with the City’s mission. Administer the fleet program budget, track costs, and forecast staffing, equipment, and material needs. Monitor expenditures and recommend adjustments as needed.
- Maintain accurate inventory of fleet vehicles in the asset management system. Coordinate vehicle purchase requests with other departments, reviewing specifications and ensuring purchases meet the City's long-term goals. Research vehicle prices and manage the purchase process.
- Administer the citywide preventative maintenance program, scheduling and implementing necessary changes. Ensure fleet compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including those from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), California Air Resources Board (CARB), and South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD).
- Oversee the Alternative Fueled Vehicle (AFV) program, implementing standards and collaborating with regulatory agencies, utilities, and private companies for funding and grants to minimize impact on the City's budget.
- Plan, assign, supervise, and review the work of fleet services staff. Provide staff training, evaluate performance, and ensure adherence to safety standards and regulations. Manage discipline and corrective actions when necessary.
- Direct the work plan for fleet services, assigning tasks and monitoring workflow. Conduct studies to identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements for better service delivery and cost efficiency.
- Ensure accurate record-keeping for vehicle and equipment maintenance, including the use of fleet management software. Oversee the permitting and compliance for underground fuel storage tanks and hazardous materials handling.
- Administer contracts for fleet services, including those for fuel island operations and CNG facilities. Ensure fiduciary oversight and compliance with contract terms.
- Respond to inquiries and resolve complaints regarding fleet services in a timely and courteous manner. Provide reports and updates to management and other departments, ensuring clear communication regarding fleet operations and costs.
- Lead the fleet services team, ensuring that work is completed safely and in compliance with City policies. Provide direction and counsel to staff, resolve issues, and support professional development.
- Experience in Advanced Clean Fleet (ACF) compliance and familiarity with vehicle replacement costs, technology limitations, and infrastructure needs.
- Adopt innovation and foster partnerships within the City to build out an electrical charging infrastructure.
- Analyze market research to identify benefits of an adoption of an electrified fleet.
- Manage CNG, pure electric vehicles, and hybrid vehicles.
- Possess advanced level knowledge of vehicle construction and methods and techniques of equipment installation and vehicle modification.

- Bachelor's degree in business management, mechanical engineering or related field.
- Six years increasingly responsible experience, including at least two years supervisory experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
