What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Quality Intern position at City of Jacksonville NC?
The City of Jacksonville is looking for summer interns to work for the purpose of gaining a working knowledge of the development and administration of the NPDES Stormwater/ Water Quality, CAMA, Soil and Erosion Control and Habitat Protection programs and their environmental impact compliance and enforcement. Work is performed under the supervision of the Storm Water Manager.
This is an Internship with the Water Quality Division in the City of Jacksonville that coincides with most college programs summer break from Late May to Early August.
The Water Quality Intern typically works Monday Through Thursday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM for 28 to 32 hours per week. However, a few weeks in the Summer will be longer stretching Monday through Friday with the possibility of overtime.Assisting with Stormwater/Water Quality Improvement Initiatives, public education, public involvement, illicit discharge and “Good Housekeeping” components of Phase II permit; the Soil and Erosion control program, CAMA program and Habitat Protection which will include data collection, preparing and maintaining required files and records.
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
Thorough knowledge of City, state and federal laws governing water quality initiatives; thorough knowledge of public information and public education methods and techniques; thorough knowledge of laboratory procedures and sampling techniques; ability to administer enforcement action, when necessary, in a firm but tactful manner; ability to operate motorized boats; ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees, City and regulatory agency officials and the general public.
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

- Assists with continued activities associated with the maintenance of the Wilson Bay Water Quality Initiative and all other Restoration projects.
- Assist with the public education, public involvement and outreach and "Good Housekeeping" components to City employees as required by USEPA under the NPDES Phase II Permit.
- Assists with the illicit discharge component for the Stormwater Management Plan as required by the USEPA under the NPDES Phase II permit.
- Assists with the marking and mapping all of the storm drains, catch basins and outfalls within the City.
- Cleans, calibrates and downloads water quality data sondes (YSI’s).
- Assists with storm water reduction-related activities and all illicit discharges.
- Assists with the inspection of the Cities as well as privately permitted SCM’s, Soil and erosion control sites, CAMA requests and all restoration projects.
- Assists with the collection of finfish, water quality parameters, stormwater, and fecal samples on weekly/daily basis.
- Assists in providing educational information and materials for all environmental programs for the City of Jacksonville as well as our NPDES stormwater program to include National Night Out.
- Assists with educational programs at SC, the city youth program and the New River Institutes.
- Assists with the program for removal of Invasive Aquatic Plants.
- Assists with sets maintenance and data collection.
- Assist with the Oyster Highway Project.
- Performs related tasks as required.
