The Planning and Development Department is actively seeking three (3) Building Plans Examiner.

This is administrative work in examining construction plans for residential, commercial and industrial buildings for compliance with applicable building codes. Work requires knowledge of building construction codes, architectural and structural drafting techniques, methods, and procedures used to analyze proposed construction designs and plans involving the use of specialized skills that are gained through specialized training and experience. Contacts require skills in understanding, assessing and influencing people's behavior when recommending changes to non-conforming construction designs. The work is standardized in that tasks are covered by substantially diversified procedures and specialized standards requiring use of judgment. Work is performed in an office environment. Operates standard office equipment and standard measuring devices. The physical demands are minimal. The work is performed under limited supervision where assignments are subject to established practices and procedures and reviewed for quality and adherence to established methods, standards and policies.
- Reviews and analyzes residential, commercial and industrial construction drawings, plans and other specifications for compliance with construction building codes.
- Calculates and verifies engineering designs and permit fees.
- Informs applicants of structural discrepancies and other non-conforming building plans and advises them of corrections.
- Answers inquiries to assist and provide guidance on building code compliance.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville Competencies.
- Performs related work as required.
- Knowledge of building construction codes and standard specifications, architectural and structural drafting techniques, and structural computation methods, procedures and terminology.
- Knowledge of construction designs and plans and blueprints and permits.
- Knowledge of applicable building construction and zoning code requirements.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, diagrams and plans.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- A five-year combination of education, training or experience at the technical or professional level in construction and inspection, which must include at least one year of experience.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
- If not already certified by the State of Florida as a Building Plans Examiner, must process an application for a provisional State of Florida Certificate as a Building Plans Examiner within one (1) month of appointment.
- Must possess or obtain within 3 months of appointment a provisional State of Florida Certificate as a Building Plans Examiner.
- Must possess or obtain with in twelve (12) months of receiving provisional certification, a standard State of Florida Certificate as a Building Plans examiner and maintain same during employment in this class. An active valid Florida Architect License may be maintained in lieu of a FL Plans Examiner License.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- The probationary period for this classification is six months.
