What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior DBA - Technology Solutions position at City of Jacksonville?
The Technology Solutions Department is actively seeking a Senior DBA.

- Manage SQL Server databases through multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems.
- Configure and maintain database servers and processes, including monitoring of system health and performance, to ensure high levels of performance, availability and security.
- Apply data modeling techniques to ensure development and implementation support efforts meet integration and performance expectations.
- Independently analyze, solve, and correct issues in real time, providing problem resolution end-to-end.
- Refine and automate regular processes, track issues and document changes.
- Assist developers with complex query tuning and schema refinement.
- Provide 24x7 support for critical production systems.
- Perform scheduled maintenance and support release deployment after hours.
- Conduct periodic database restoration and recovery to ensure viability of backup methodology.
- Make changes for stored procedures and other database objects to the production environment.
- Install and configure new SQL Servers.
- Deploy database change scripts provided by third party vendors.
- When performance issues arise, determine the most effective way to increase performance including server configuration changes.
- Serve as subject matter expert for IT projects, products and services.
- Conduct proactive maintenance of IT infrastructure with minimal supervision including maintaining high level of systems availability, monitoring systems performance and reliability to mitigate outages and system interruptions, managing tools for providing early warning and alerts, and monitoring system capacity utilization and taking proactive steps to avoid over utilization.
- Work with vendors to resolve system outages.
- Work closely with other technology and application personnel to understand and implement application requirements, server/network/storage tuning, and configuration changes.
- Consult in design of new applications and services to ensure they can be support by the infrastructure
- Diagnose and resolve technical issues, conduct root cause analysis, and demonstrate consistent level of accuracy with basic problem resolution.
- Maintain an in-depth knowledge of a specific current technology, both internally and within IT industry, and its applicability to the organization.
- Operate personal computer including word, spreadsheet, database, and other related software to include Visio.
- Respond to and resolve assigned tickets and requests.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Jacksonville Core Competencies.
- Proficient communication and presentation skills.
- Must be able to clearly document technical information for team review and for management.
- At times when required, must be able to cross-train and perform other server and database functions.
- After hours work as required.
- Performs related work as required.
- Eight years of education and/or experience in information technology which must include at least four years of professional experience with MS SQL Server Administration and proficiency with Windows Server 2008 through 2022 operating systems.
- Must have experience with Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
- Must have experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) and SQL Server Report Services (SSRS) of MS SQL Server Tools.
- Knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server.
- Requires periodic work during evening/weekend hours to provide support and project implementation
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in IT, Computer Science, or related field preferred.
Other Requirements:
Must pass the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background screening performed by the Jacksonville Sherriff’s Office prior to appointment.
Within 30 days of appointment date to classification, acquire and maintain the appropriate level of Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) certification which corresponds to the job responsibilities. The level will be determined by current CJIS guidelines and may change periodically. Certification is obtained by successfully completing a web-based training course and test which covers physical security, incident response, the protection of information and other IT specific security threats, vulnerabilities, and risks.
