The Office of Administrative Services is actively seeking a Solid Waste Weighmaster.

This is clerical support work in the receipt and processing of solid waste payments for disposal, to include explaining rules, regulations and providing customer service. The work requires knowledge of the techniques, methods and procedures governing waste disposal and the receipt and processing of disposal fees. Contacts with others require basic courtesy, tact and effectiveness in dealing with others, including contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. The work is performed following established routines, procedures and standing instructions, and although patterned, some variation in the sequence and choice of procedures used is permitted based on situations encountered in the workplace. Work is performed in a booth or office and field environment, but the risks and hazards are minimal, known, predictable, and controllable. The position may be exposed to dust, wind, fumes, and adverse weather conditions. Work schedule is shift work to include early morning and evening hours. Also requires working Saturdays and holidays. Operates personal computer, calculators, adding machines and other standard office equipment. The physical demands consist mainly of sitting or standing in one place for extended periods of time and may occasionally require lifting or moving light objects weighing less than 50 pounds. The work is performed under general supervision where the work is subject to instructions and established work routines and procedures and the worker is given latitude to rearrange the sequence based on changing work situations.
- Weighs vehicles entering the landfill using computerized scale systems.
- Determines appropriate material codes and rates.
- Accepts payment in cash, check or charge transactions; provide receipts for disposal charges.
- Issues change for cash transactions.
- Prepares daily shift balance report and deposit.
- Answers, or refers to others, customers' questions regarding waste disposal.
- Maintains assigned petty cash change fund.
- Confers with supervisors and landfill operator's staff regarding operational procedures and controversial issues.
- Responds to telephone inquiries.
- Directs traffic at scale facility.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
- Performs related work as required.
- Knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures of solid waste disposal.
- Knowledge of cash handling practices and procedures.
- Skill in operating computers and various standard office equipment.
- Ability to learn the laws, rules, regulations and procedures governing waste disposal and the receipt and processing of solid waste payments
- Ability to receive and process payments.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to communicate rules and regulations effectively to the public.
- Ability to operate personal computer utilizing Paradigm WeighStation, calculators, adding machines and other standard office equipment.
- Two years of education and/or experience in clerical support work that includes performing cash transactions, preparing deposit slips, customer service or preparing computerized reports.
The probationary period for this class is six months.
