Annual Salary:  $ 110,000.00

This position reports to the Chief of Animal Care & Protective Services. The primary purposes of this position are to examine and triage animals entering the facility, develop and oversee appropriate treatment plans for animals requiring emergency or ongoing medical care, perform surgeries, monitor the health and care of animals housed at the shelter, and act in the capacity of an expert witness in court cases.  
  • Ability to perform high volume sterilization surgeries (average 35 per day)  
  • Ability to perform additional soft tissue surgeries and dental procedures.
  • Ability to deliver high quality veterinary care in a fast-paced, high-volume environment to new incoming animals, current shelter population and the shelter’s foster population.
  • Advises the Chief and other managers in areas of veterinary medicine. 
  • Performs and interprets results from necropsies and forensic examinations for criminal cases; and testifies to same as needed. 
  • Research medical literature and stays informed of most recent scientific data and recommendations to develop and review standard operating procedures within the shelter.
  • Communicates effectively with pet owners, coworkers, leadership and volunteers while fostering a positive working environment that thrives on efficiency and collaboration.
  • Be available for after-hours assistance for Animal Service Officers and Veterinary Technician staff as needed to advise/assist with treatment decisions for critically injured or debilitated animals.
  • The Veterinarian shall be a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited institution. 
  • The Veterinarian must be licensed in the state of Florida with license maintained in good standing during employment. 
  • DEA Licensure will be required within six (6) months of appointment and must be maintained during employment.  
  • The Veterinarian must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and sit regularly to perform duties. 
  • Can perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds alone or up to one hundred (100) pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances.
