OBJECTIVE:
Under general supervision and guidance of the Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Supervisor and guidance from the Recreation Programmer, the Aqua Fitness Instructor leads instruction of Aqua Zumba classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Rockport Pool during the summer season.  Other evening opportunities may arise at Palmer Pool.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Supervisor; Recreation Programmer  

Has work contact with appointed and elected City officials, Department, Division, and Office Heads, City employees, and the general public.

Supervises: Has no regular supervisory duties.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   1. Creates and plans class instruction plans and provides related equipment including corresponding music.
  2. Provides instruction through demonstrating proper technique and form for aqua fitness exercises and movement. 
  3. Maintains a presence with proper apparel and equipment.
  4. Scans and surveys the pool for potential issues or safety concerns. Makes class modifications or individual participant modifications as needed.  
  5. Provides necessary first aid and/or CPR and reacts appropriate in emergency situations.
  6. Follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures; reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor; reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible; follows recognized safe work practices.
  7. Performs other special projects and other job duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours.
  8. All employees may be assigned by the City Manager or their designee to perform duties and assume responsibilities that are outside the scope of their work duties when the City Manager has declared a City disaster or the City Emergency Operations Center has been initiated.
OTHER DUTIES:
  1. Keeps proper records of attendance for each class. 
  2. Informs Supervisors of issues that arise.
  3. Provides polite customer service to all class participants.
  4. .Performs other duties as assigned. 
The requirements listed below are necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
  1. Must be 16 years of age or older.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The qualifications listed below are preferred, but not required to perform the essential duties of the position. The absence of these qualifications on a candidate’s application does not preclude them from consideration.
  1. Previous experience in teaching aerobic and/or aqua fitness classes preferred. 
A combination of equivalent experience and/or education as determined by the Human Resources Office may be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.

  1. Working knowledge of water aerobics and Zumba activities.

  1. Teaching aqua fitness fundamentals and exercises.
  2. Motivating and engaging class participants.
  3. Organizational and time management skills to prioritize duties and accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  4. Exceptional communication skills, paired with a strong customer service background, and effective interpersonal skills.
  5. Collaboration skills to effectively work with others to achieve common goals through communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
Abilities: 
  1. Ability to work evenings.
  2. Ability to compose routine correspondence and routine reports in a clear, concise, logical, and effective manner, utilizing proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and tone.
  3. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, and to compute percentages. 
  4. Ability to effectively teach class to small and large groups of individuals, and successfully communicate with the general public.
  5. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, adapt to changing priorities, and to work smoothly and cooperatively on a variety of projects.
  6. Ability to make decisions according to applicable laws, regulations, established procedures, and the directives of the City Manager and City Council.
  7. Ability to learn and apply new technology and computerized systems/building systems in order to detect and diagnose operational problems and maintenance needs.
  8. Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to supervisor.
  9. Ability to maintain a valid, state-issued driver’s license.

EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTS, AND MACHINES:
Equipment used includes various teaching tools, such as water noodles, water weights, kickboards, etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL FACTORS:

1.   Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in program activities.
3.   Work will take place in an outdoor environment and varying types of weather, including
      possibility of high heat and humidity.
4.   Working conditions involve occasional exposure to dirt, dust, and moisture.
5.   Perform basic instruction to program activities, which may include, but not limited to: 
      Semi-reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, turning, 
      and lying on stomach and/or back.   
6.   Must be able to sit or stand and move for long periods of time.
7.   See and observe all sections of an assigned area of responsibility, with or without   
      reasonable accommodation.
