In this pivotal role within the Department of Public Works – Engineering team, you will be responsible for:
- Preparing or supervising contractual preparation of bid documents, engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates, feasibility reports, and documentation of public works projects, including stormwater management and transportation.
- Leading professional design and construction teams, including internal and external engineers, technicians, and consultants, to develop and deliver complex and consequential public works infrastructure projects.
- Project management, including contract administration, quantity documentation, budgeting, estimating, scheduling, reviewing contract proposals, and recommending contract awards.
- Reviewing private development projects to maintain compliance with federal, state, and city regulations, statutes, and ordinances regarding public improvement projects, stormwater management, and transportation projects.
- Supporting CoJ’s economic development initiatives through planning, study, design, and implementation of public infrastructure to facilitate residential, commercial, and industrial development.

What qualifications are necessary for the role?
To be successful and well prepared for this position, the minimum education and experience required includes:
- A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, biological systems engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in civil engineering project management, planning, and designs.
- Registered as a professional engineer in the State of Wisconsin or ability to obtain licensure reciprocity within three (3) months of hire or promotion or Certification in Stormwater Management through the American Public Works Association.
- A valid, state-issued driver’s license at time of hire is required

A combination of equivalent experience, education, or professional training that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position as determined by the Human Resources Office may be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.
What is the typical schedule?
Typically, you will work Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. However, at times, this position is expected to work additional hours to ensure projects and critical work assignments are completed.
What is the pay?
The starting annual salary for this position is $86,854 - $97,800 ($41.57 - $47.02 per hour); this is an exempt position. This position is also eligible for annual economic adjustments and performance-based adjustments, as approved by the City Council.

Furthermore, the City of Janesville strives to ease the transition between employers by minimizing the stress associated with gaps in insurance coverage.
