Crew Leader (Water)

As a Crew Leader, you will play a key part in overseeing daily tasks and activities related to the operation of the Water Utility. As a Water Crew Leader, you will lead, train, schedule, support, and provide guidance to your team members.

Join our Water Division team and help make a significant impact on our city. In this role, you’ll performs unskilled or semiskilled tasks in a wide variety of Utility maintenance operations. This position involves performing supervisory functions and requires the use of judgment in carrying out work activities.

Minimum Position Requirements/Qualifications

What qualifications are necessary for the role?

To perform the essential duties of the position, the minimum education and experience required includes:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Water Operator 2 or as a Customer Service Technician 2 is required, or a minimum of five (5) years’ progressively responsible experience in Water Utility construction activities with a comparable water utility.
  • A valid Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Distribution & Groundwater Certification upon hire or promotion is required.
  • A valid, state-issued driver’s license at time of hire is required. Possession of a valid state-issued Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License, or ability to obtain such license within twelve (12) months of hire or promotion is required.
  • Completion of CVMIC’s Emerging Leader Certification Program within twelve (12) months of promotion is required.

What is the typical schedule?

A typical work schedule is 6 a.m. – 2 p.m. Additionally, this position will respond to emergency situations twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week as needed.


What is the pay?

The starting annual salary for this position is $58,428 ($28.09 per hour); this is a non-exempt position. This position is also eligible for annual economic adjustments and performance-based adjustments, as approved by the City Council.

When factoring in the benefits alongside your annual salary, the overall compensation rate could range from $69,439.02 per year, contingent upon the selected benefits and coverage types.

Furthermore, the City of Janesville strives to ease the transition between employers by minimizing the stress associated with gaps in insurance coverage. For new hires before the 15th of the month, medical, dental, and vision insurance become effective on the date of hire. For those hired on or after the 15th of the month, these benefits kick in on the 1st of the following month.
