Objective & Relationships

Supervisor is responsible for providing on-site supervision for camp staff and participants in a safe manner. This person provides good communication to counselors, parents, Recreation Programmer, and the Recreation Division office. The Camp Supervisor purchases, designs, prepares, and organizes daily camp activities/lesson plans while enforcing rules/discipline plan.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Recreation Programmer

Works with seasonal employees on a regular basis and communicates with other division employees, professional staff, parents, campers, and the general public.
Supervises Head Camp Counselors (KCC only), Camp Counselors (only in absence of Head Camp Counselor-KCC only), and Counselors in Training.

Kids Count Camp Supervisor: (30–40 hours per week for 11-12 weeks)
Camp Tot Lot Supervisor/2-3 one-hour pop-up play in parks: (15-20 hrs./week for 6-7 weeks)
Must be available to work the whole duration of camp (dates given at interview)
Must be available for mandatory training during May 19-June 7, 2025.

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Responsible for camp administration and planning.

  • Organizes and conducts weekly staff meetings.
  • Prepares and distributes staff schedules and makes sure they are followed.
  • Pays attention to camper registrations and records. Notifies staff.
  • Maintains attendance records, problem reports, injury reports, discipline plan tracking, and completes program evaluation report.
  • Provides feedback to Head Camp Counselor on camp activities.
  • Organizes field trips and community trips.
  • Assists in the planning, organization, and preparation of all camp activities.
2. Responsible for coordinating and organizing camp activities, and overall supervision.
  • Ready for daily activities and programs through purchasing supplies, keeping supplies stocked, and assisting Head Camp Counselor with organizing needed equipment, supplies, and instructions for activities when needed.
  • Informs Head Camp Counselor of ideas for camp schedules.
  • Coordinates with Head Camp Counselors on when and how to lead activities and/or assists with leading if needed (KCC only).
  • Leads or directs counselors to lead activities (Tot Lot).
  • Understands children's differences and needs and provides guidance to counselors and/or Head Camp Counselors (KCC only).
  • Emphasizes and models good sportsmanship.
  • Encourages children to participate in activities through positive reinforcement.
3. Responsible for enforcing camp rules.
  • Understands all camp and Recreation Division rules and procedures.
  • Enforces camp rules in a prompt, fair, and consistent manner.
  • Handles major discipline or camper behavior issues. Documents both minor and major issues on problem reports. Reports major issues to Recreation Programmer.
  • Must be familiar with specific duties in the case of emergencies.
4. Responsible for camper safety.
  • Ensures camp area is free and safe from hazards.
  • Corrects or reports known safety issues immediately.
  • Implements changes to activities or procedures if needed.
  • Provides proper first aid and emergency care as needed. Determines if issue and takes appropriate action.
  • Reports major issues to Recreation Programmer.
  • Serves as a positive role model to the participants.
5. Communicates effectively with the Recreation Programmer, Head Camp Counselors (KCC only), camp counselors, C.I.T.s, campers, and parents.
  • Answers parent complaints and inquiries. Contacts parents to report behavior and injury as necessary.
  • Major camper issues should be documented and reported immediately.
  • Alert, courteous, professional, and tactful in voice and body.
  • Makes requests and issues orders in a courteous, respectful, and mature manner.
  • Ensures customer satisfaction.
  • Liaison to Recreation Programmer and Recreation Division office.
6. Supervise Head Camp Counselors (KCC only), Camp Counselors (Tot Lot), and
C.I.T.s.
  • Assigns staff to various shifts, daily responsibilities, job duties, and activities in charge of.
  • Motivates staff to provide a fun-filled and safe environment for all participants.
  • Ensures timecards are accurately filled out by staff and turned in.
  • Monitors and documents staff and C.I.T. behavior and corrects known issues.
  • Reports staff and C.I.T. behavior issues requiring discipline to Recreation Programmer and handles disciple as assigned by Recreation Programmer.
  • Assists with staff and C.I.T. evaluations.
7. Assists with maintenance and general care of facility and equipment.
  • Keeps storage area clean and organized.
  • Maintains a clean pavilion/camp atmosphere.
  • Makes Recreation Programmer aware of any facility damages.
  • Understands opening and closing procedures.
  • Responsible for end of season equipment inventory and turns in to the Recreation Programmer
8. Reports any issues to the Recreation Programmer.
9. Other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Position Requirements/Qualifications

Minimum education and experience required to perform essential duties of the position.
Education, Certifications and Experience:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Current Child and Adult CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications or willing to obtain.
  • Valid state-issued driver's license is required.
  • Experience in a camp or classroom setting and supervisory experience required.
Knowledge of:
  • Knowledge of camp and/or camp supervision and child behavior required.
Skill in:
  • Communication, working with children, and re-directing inappropriate behavior
Ability to:
  • Ability to be responsible, mature, enthusiastic, creative, energetic, highly organized, motivated, dependable, and interested in working with youth.
  • Ability to follow City/Department/Division policies, work independently, react quickly, calmly, and appropriately in emergency situations, and make sound decisions.
  • Able to maintain discipline.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in verbal and written form and to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, department professionals, staff, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work morning and day hours during the week.
  • Ability to attend trainings.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and within the boundaries of responsibility.
  • Always maintains a positive behavior and professional demeanor; address resident and customer concerns in a helpful, courteous manner.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to drive a 11-passenger City vehicle to transport campers and supplies as needed.
  • Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to supervisor.

Equipment used includes various sports equipment, and supplies for activities.

PHYSICAL FACTORS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in camp activities which include, but are not limited to, swimming, fishing, biking, walking, hiking, crafts, sports, physical games, and activities.
  • Must be capable of carrying loads of up to 50 pounds and able to traverse hilly and uneven terrain without undue exertion.
  • Work will take place in an outdoor environment and varying types of weather, including possibility of high heat and humidity.
  • Work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.
  • Perform essential program support to camp activities and programs which may include, but not limited to the following activities: semi–reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, working in narrow and/or confining spaces, overhead, and at ground level, twisting of the waist, shoulders and legs and lying on stomach or back.
  • Must be able to physically interact with kids for long periods of time each day.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
