What are the responsibilities and job description for the Park Resources Supervisor - Forestry/Arborist position at City of Jefferson?
The City of Jefferson is currently seeking an experienced forester to be our next Park Resources Supervisor for our Parks and Recreation Department. This position will deliver safe and excellent customer service to the public and is responsible for inspecting, planting, pruning and removing trees from public spaces, as well as responding to inquiries from city residents regarding city trees and enforcing city ordinances.
Hires, trains and supervises full-time, part-time and seasonal employees; schedules and assigns employees to work areas; conducts performance evaluations and sets goals ensuring maintenance and repair for the park system is done timely and according to guidelines.
Maintains accurate records of daily work, payroll, accident reports and prepares accurate and timely monthly operation reports.
Trains employees in proper safety practices; reviews safety procedures and recommends changes ensuring a safe working environment in accordance with safety guidelines and procedures.
Delivers a safe and excellent customer service experience to our residents and park patrons.
Operates and maintains forestry related equipment such as chainsaws, chipper, bucket truck, grapple truck, skid loader, mini excavator, truck and trailer, etc.
Schedules, supervises and participates in the removal, inspection, replacement, planting, fertilization, pruning and pest control of all park trees.
Inspects trees and shrubs for disease, insects and structural defects. Recommends treatment, pruning and removal of public trees when necessary.
Assesses and evaluates condition of trees and writes tree evaluation reports.
Maintains and updates tree inventory using databases, GIS, and GPS equipment.
Responds to inquiries from city residents concerning street trees and other forestry responsibilities.
Enforces forestry ordinances and recommends amendments to city forestry ordinances as necessary.
Plans and conducts community outreach and awareness including workshops on forestry and horticulture subjects.
Researches, develops and administers grants for all city-wide arboricultural initiatives.
Drafts reports, prepares contract specifications, solicits bids and monitors contract work in the field.
Prepares budget requests for forestry programs and oversees the requisition and purchasing of materials.
Assists other Parks and Recreation staff when necessary to complete projects, special events, implementation of Parks Master Plan and snow removal.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Physical: Ability to sit at computer for extended periods; work in extreme weather conditions; lift up to 100 pounds; traverse rough terrain; climb trees; and operate various types of vehicles, equipment and tools.
Mental: Ability to give written and oral instructions; to work a varied work schedule with long hours including weekends and holidays; motivate employees and establish effective working relationships.
Requires an accredited bachelor’s degree in forestry, Horticulture, Urban Forestry or a related field and at least two years’ experience in arboriculture, forestry, or urban forestry including two years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Requires a Missouri CDL Class B drivers' license, State of Missouri Pesticide Applicator License and American Red Cross CPR Certification within six months of hire and maintain throughout employment. Must become an ISA Certified Arborist within twelve months of employment and maintain through employment.
Our ideal candidate will possess a deep knowledge of urban forestry and arboricultural principles and practices, particularly as they relate to the planting, care, maintenance of trees and well-versed in horticultural practices. In addition, they should be able to diagnose tree and shrub risk, problems, and diseases, and apply proper care procedures to mitigate them.Salary : $53,393 - $80,090
