Normal Work Days:            Monday through Thursday


Education/Experience       

Education: Minimum of high school diploma or the equivalent.  Experience: Minimum of 2 years of construction experience and working knowledge of the methods, materials, practices, procedures, and equipment used in the construction field. Equivalent combination of education, skills, training and experience may be considered. Must possess or maintain at least a Class B CDL within 6 months.

 

Position Summary Under the general supervision of the Construction Supervisor or Construction Foreman, performs heavy, manual work installing and maintaining City owned utility systems. Repairs and installs sewer lines and manholes and provides assistance to wastewater collections and maintenance crews. Prepares/clears construction site easements by removing trees, limbs and other debris.  

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  Other related duties may be assigned.

 

Repair underground service lines, force mains, manholes, potable water lines, and gravity sewer mains: assist with installing grinder pump systems. Install sewer, water and storm drain pipes, using pipe laying machinery and laser guidance equipment.

 

Operate a variety of equipment/power tools including but not limited to weed eaters, chainsaws, pipe saws, portable pumps, concrete cutting saw and generators.

 

Maintain pumps, compressors and generators to provide power for generators and prevent back-ups.

Read, operate and maintain air monitoring and other sampling devices in confined spaces and/or hazardous environments.

 

Assist in pipe lining operations (Thermoform)

 

Recommends appropriate maintenance and repair and process operational changes to Supervisor.  Assist co-workers with minimum of direction.

 

Perform heavy manual labor including, digging, and lifting under various weather conditions.  Dig trenches or ditches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes. Clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set trench boxes to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris.

                Ability to

  • Operate various power and hand tools including, but not limited to, air compressors, gasoline/diesel powered pumps, pipe lining equipment and sewer cleaning equipment.
  • Repair and install sewer lines.
  • Read and follow safety rules and safely operate equipment; identify precautions for and emergency response to biological, chemical, electrical and mechanical hazards.
  • Read and interpret blueprint construction plans


Computer/Office equipment Skills:

Basic Computer skills.  Ability to operate a hand-held data management device.

 

Licenses:

Possess a valid driver’s license. 

Possess or obtain at least a Class B within 6 months.

Position requires walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time; working in confined spaces; bending, squatting, twisting, crawling, kneeling and climbing frequently in the performance of job duties; and work with hand and power tools/equipment. Must be able to lift at least 80 lbs. (the average weight of a manhole cover)

 

Requires ability and willingness to work after normal work hours and to work any shift, holidays and weekends if needed.

Manual tasks/work is performed in extreme weather conditions, such as wind, rain, snow, ice, thunder storms. (Possibly for extended periods of time.). Job exposures worker to temperature extremes, high work places, noises, toxic materials and vibrations.
