SUPERVISING MAINTENANCE REPAIRER

Workweek: Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM

The City of Jersey City is seeking a qualified and experienced Supervising Maintenance Repairer for the Department of Public Works. Under direction, the ideal candidate will supervise and work with a group of employees to perform a variety of maintenance and repair tasks including electrical work, masonry, painting, plastering, carpentry, plumbing, steam fitting, roofing, and other tasks related to the upkeep of buildings and other structures.
Job Duties:
· Supervises and works with a group of employees involved in installing traffic signs and mixing paints for traffic lines and painting traffic lines.
· Supervises and works with a group of employees involved in repairing damaged signposts and signs.
· Performs sign installations and records data and location.
· Provides daily instructions and assignments.
· Prepares evaluations, special reports, and maintenance records to provide information on repairs, renovations, and custodial work activities.
· Requests materials for daily assignments and keeps an up to date inventory.
· Receives and completes work orders.
· Maintains records of sign locations.
· Reviews work in progress or following completion, and changes work plans, work assignments, and methods as necessary to reduce or control costs and to accomplish work as efficiently as possible.
· Selects the proper size metal plate for reflective metal signs.
· Determines current availability of materials and equipment and/or the need for additional equipment and materials.
· Removes and installs channel posts for street signs.
· Operates pick-up, ladder, aerial platforms trucks, and drilling equipment.
· Erects and repairs damaged traffic poles and signs.
· Ensures work zone safety by setting up barricades and move cones, etc.
· Performs other related duties as required.

Required Education:
High School Diploma or GED required.
Required Experience:
Three (3) to Five (5) years of experience in sign installation and traffic signals.
Required License:
Appointees must possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Preferred Certification: OSHA-10 certification.
Essential Skills:
· Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, practices, and safety precautions used in the maintenance and repair of buildings, other structures, grounds, and utility systems.
· Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
· Ability to understand technical terminology common to various trades.
· Ability to organize a work crew and give them assignments and instructions.
· Ability to assist subordinates when difficult and unusual problems arise.
· Ability to check the work of subordinates to ensure proper procedures are followed, that reasonable standards of workmanship and output are observed, and that desired objectives are achieved.
· Ability to prepare daily time and cost records, material reports, accident and property damage reports, and employee efficiency reports.
· Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
· Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
Residency Requirement: Employee must be a resident of the State of New Jersey or become a resident of New Jersey within a year (“New Jersey First Act” P.L. 2011, c.70)
