The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is accepting online applications for a Motor Equipment Operator III with the Public Works department Stormwater/Construction crew. The employee performs difficult semiskilled work operating a grader, bulldozer, backhoe, dump truck, hydraulic excavator or other heavy equipment; does related work as required. This is skilled work in the operation of the heaviest and most complex municipally-owned construction and maintenance equipment requiring unusual care and skill in operation. The work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of heavy automotive and construction equipment. Position in this class are differentiated from positions in a lower level equipment operating class because of the greater manipulative skill, and attention required to move, place or smooth materials expeditiously, and to protect workmen and the equipment from damage. The employee operates the heavy equipment with skill to complete challenging construction projects. The work also involves installation or repair of all associated roadway infrastructure.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in equipment operation; thorough knowledge of the functions, operating methods and care required of a wide variety of heavy and complex construction equipment used on various jobs such as excavating, working to grade, rolling and related work, and street paving processes; thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in servicing and repairing heavy equipment; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment; thorough knowledge of the geography of the City, including the location and layout of streets and alleys; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and to work independently in the performance of regular working duties; skill and care in the operation of heavy maintenance and construction automotive equipment; physical strength and agility sufficient to operate heavy equipment over rough terrain occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
Acceptable Experience and Training: Completion of high school or GED and considerable experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy and complex construction equipment at the level of Motor Equipment Operator II; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid Class "B" CDL issued by the State of Tennessee. Pre-employment DOT physical, drug screening and background check required.
