What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accounting Specialist - Central Cashier position at City of Joplin?
Requires successful post-offer completion of a background investigation, physical exam, and drug test (including marijuana/THC) as a condition of employment with the City of Joplin.
Primary Purpose
Performs routine to complex accounting duties necessary for preparing, maintaining, and coordinating various types of accounting information required for financial reporting systems.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Accredited college coursework in Accounting is preferred, but not required.
Experience: Two years of full-time work experience in bookkeeping is required. An Associate’s degree in Accounting or a related field may be substituted for one year of work experience.
Licenses and Certifications: Possess and maintain a valid state issued driver’s license, depending on the departmental assigned.
Essential Job Functions
- Responsible for the City's central cashiering function and maintaining cash receipts files.
- Collects payments for licenses, fees, and permits.
- Collects payments for utility billing.
- Verifies funds collected by outside departments; enters receipt information.
- Reviews accuracy of cash receipt account coding and sufficiency of documentation.
- Responsible for cab coupon program sales and record maintenance.
- Responds to inquiries and complaints from citizens or other external customers.
- Assists with business license renewals; ensures requirements have been met prior to issuance of license or permit.
- Distributes accounts payable checks.
- Coordinates collection of insufficient funds checks.
- Compiles and files accounts payable records.
- Maintains petty cash funds.
- Interacts professionally and courteously with the public, City employees, and vendors; attempts to solve problems for unsatisfied customers, employees, or vendors and notifies supervisor for assistance when necessary.
