General Nature of Work

The Court Bailiff is responsible for facilitating the smooth operation of court activities and ensuring the safety and security of all visitors, employees, and the general public within courthouse and courtroom environments. This role includes various duties related to courtroom security, operations, and support to judges and court personnel.

Job Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Attend court sessions every Tuesday from 8am until court session is complete.
  • Prepare courtrooms for court sessions by ensuring that all necessary materials, documents, and equipment are available and ready.
  • Announce the opening and closing of court sessions.
  • Maintain order and decorum within the courtroom during proceedings. Assist in enforcing courtroom rules and procedures to ensure the smooth conduct of trials and hearings.
  • Monitor the courthouse and courtroom to ensure the safety of the public, staff, and judges.
  • Respond promptly to any emergencies or security incidents within the courthouse. Quickly respond to urgent tasks and shifting priorities, ensuring that all areas are appropriately supported.
  • Assist the judge and court clerks with courtroom needs, including document retrieval, delivery, and any other requirements during court sessions. Aid other court personnel as needed to ensure efficient operations.
  • Provide support to the citizens of the City of Kennesaw, which includes, but not limited to, assisting the Municipal Court Judge, Solicitor, City of Kennesaw Police Department, and various other government agencies.
  • Assist individuals in completing and filing legal documents, ensuring that they comply with court rules and procedures.
  • Operate a personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Clerk of Court.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, And ABILITIES

  • Understanding of court regulations, processes, and the role of the justice system.
  • Familiarity with courtroom decorum and the roles of various personnel (judges, lawyers, etc.).
  • Knowledge of techniques to de-escalate conflicts and manage difficult situations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly convey information and instructions.
  • Ability to interact positively and effectively with diverse individuals, including judges, attorneys, and the public.
  • Keen observational skills to monitor courtroom activities and identify potential issues.
  • Ability to assess situations quickly and make sound judgments.
  • Capacity to remain on foot for extended periods and handle physical tasks as needed.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and empathize with individuals in stressful situations.
  • Strong focus on following procedures accurately to uphold legal standards.

This position is offered at $120.00 per diem and will typically work on Tuesdays from 8am-untill close of court

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training in law enforcement, court procedures, or related field preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in high-pressure environments.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements: Bailiffs often need to be on their feet for extended periods, which requires good stamina and endurance. They may need to walk, stand, or move quickly throughout the courthouse. This role may involve carrying equipment or assisting in the transport of individuals, so physical strength is beneficial. Bailiffs should also be mobile enough to navigate quickly and efficiently within the court environment. Good hand-eye coordination and situational awareness are critical for monitoring courtroom activity, handling documents, and responding to emergencies. Ability to handle stress as the courtroom environment can be high-pressure, so bailiffs need to maintain composure and effectiveness when faced with challenging situations.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
