What are the responsibilities and job description for the Crossing Guard-Floater position at City of Kenosha?
Applications are being accepted for the position of School Crossing Guard. Individuals who are hired will work during the school year, approximately 10 - 15 hours per week. The eligibility list developed from this recruitment will be used to fill both floater positions (assigned to various corners) as well as permanent corner positions.The duties of a School Crossing Guard are to safely direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic at school crossings and other related duties as required. This is a seasonal position that is occupied only during the public school year in the City of Kenosha. The primary responsibility of the School Crossing Guard is the safety of school children crossing the streets and intersections as they proceed to and from school. The Crossing Guard must report to his/her assigned post at a predetermined time before the morning and afternoon school sessions begin and remain on duty until the respective sessions end. The School Crossing Guard will only be paid for sessions worked.
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Supervise children crossing streets and intersections at their assigned posts, seeing that the children remain on the sidewalk until it is safe to cross.
- Safely enter the middle of the street or intersection, signaling by handheld stop sign and hand signal for vehicular traffic to stop, allowing the children to cross safely. The Crossing Guard will then return to their post and allow traffic to flow normally.
- Report observed violations of law to their supervisor and may subsequently be required to testify in a court of law as to their observations.
- Assist children as appropriate, while maintaining control of the assigned intersection.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to arrange for transportation to assignments.
- Availability by telephone.
- Ability to use good judgment.
- Ability to deal effectively and courteously with people of all ages.
- Prior experience working with children is desired, but not necessary to apply for this position.
- No physical, mental or emotional conditions which could adversely affect their ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
- Vision correctable to 20/40.
- Ability to pass a hearing examination.
- Physical stamina to endure standing for extended periods of time, often under inclement weather conditions.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to furnish their own transportation.
- No felony conviction substantially related to the job.
