What are the responsibilities and job description for the GIS Intern position at City of Kenosha?
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant City Engineer, the Engineering Division of Public Works is seeking GIS interns. The GIS intern will put the GIS knowledge learned in the classroom to real world use. In addition, the GIS intern will also experience many other City of Kenosha departments including Streets, Storm, Waste, Electrical, Parks, City Development, and many more.
These positions are tentatively scheduled to work 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday, during the summer months. Working hours may be adjusted to accommodate summer classes toward an academic degree as determined on a case-by-case basis. Work involves a variety of tasks primarily performed outdoors. Based on satisfactory performance as an Intern and academic progression toward a degree, incumbents may be rehired as an Intern next summer.
GIS Intern- Collect data and input to a geographic information systems (GIS).
- Update current City-wide inventory systems such as street signs, parking regulations, storm sewer system, memorial benches and trees, electrical systems, and others.
- Update other various City assets in GIS.
- Create and maintain WebMaps and WebApps.
GIS Intern
- High school diploma or GED/HSED.
- Must be enrolled in a 2 - 4 year college degree that incorporates engineering, GIS, geography, computer science, or other related fields (with good academic standing).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of basic GIS.
- Knowledge and proficiency in basic computer and GIS software applications.
- Ability to use GIS field instruments and standard office equipment.
- Ability to learn quickly and work independently.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to make accurate mathematical computations
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to complete and maintain accurate records and reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.
Physical Requirements:
- Work may involve regular, and at times sustained, standing, walking or sitting.
- Work may involve the performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 pound) items.
Sensory Requirements:
- Work requires visual, color, sound, odor, depth, texture perception and discrimination.
Working or Environmental Conditions:
- Work is performed in an office or outdoors, with infrequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
Other Requirements:
- Must possess a valid driver's license and have a good driving record and be able to use a personal vehicle for work duties.
- Must pass the pre-employment drug test.
