Performs semi-skilled, skilled, technical, and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the City of Killeen.
Essential Duties
Core Competencies
Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
Ability to safely operate a Forklift and/or other lifting devices.
Tests, services, and repairs light and heavy vehicles and equipment.
Inspects, adjusts, and/or replaces necessary components and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
Repairs brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.
Cuts and welds metal and related work.
Performs all-wheel alignments.
Ability to operate brake rotor lathe.
Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
Enters work order updates and progress in a computer-based maintenance program.
Maintains the security of issued city owned equipment. (e.g., tools, toolbox, safety equipment)
Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Motorized vehicles, power and hand tools, and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles such as electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment, computer analyzer, alignment machine, AC machine, tire balancer, brake lathe, telephone and safety equipment as required, personal computer, including fleet maintenance software.

Required Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent; and
- One (1) year of specialized training from an accredited institute; or
- Three (3) years related experience.
- Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding.
- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.
- Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
- Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public.
- Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
Special Requirements
- Must have a valid driver’s license by date of hire.
- Texas State CDL License preferred but not required by date of hire.
- Must obtain an air conditioning certification, state Motor Vehicle Inspector’s (MVI) certification and Texas State CDL License within one (1) year, funded by the City.
- Upon completion of the six (6) month probationary period, employee will be required to be “on-call” for after-hours emergencies approximately one week per quarter.
- Certification in vehicle maintenance preferred.
