GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs routine clerical and semi-skilled utility work in the reading and operation of utility meters. To cover assigned routes and takes readings of meter dials; to record reading on meter cards or inputs data into hand-held micro-computing device to provide needed information for utility billing or other related action; to note any unusual changes in consumption, location or malfunctions such as leaks or damaged meters. To assist in tagging of delinquent accounts delinquent cut-offs and reconnections. To provides field customer service that requires courtesy, tact and diplomacy.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Employee has no supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Travels assigned routes and takes readings of meter dials; inputs data into handheld microcomputer devices.
Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage and unauthorized connection or use and; reports findings to supervisor.
Installs, removes and replaces meter boxes and lids.
Possesses the ability to work independently and unsupervised.
Tags doors and disconnects water service to delinquent non-pay accounts.
Rechecks readings as needed to determine abnormal consumption patterns and analyze possible causes for fluctuation or consumption.
Calculates consumptions.
Assists in the maintenance and repair of meters; replaces defective meters; tests meters for accuracy.
Maintains assigned tools and equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Responds to work orders for utility disconnections, reconnections, new orders, and other public works service requests, as assigned.
Assists in the analysis and improvement of assigned routes.
Serves as a member of various employee committees.
Serves on stand-by shifts.
Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations; possesses and maintains a valid driver's license, if required, and comply with City of Killeen driving policy accordingly.

Education And Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent; and
- One (1) year of meter reading experience, preferred.
- Working knowledge of data entry.
- Working knowledge of basic arithmetic.
- Skill in operating listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to perform and record arithmetic computations accurately and quickly.
- Ability to accurately read and record data from various type of meter dials.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work in inclement weather.
- Ability to establish successful working relationships.
- Ability to work with angry or difficult customers.
- Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
Special Requirements
- Must have a valid driver’s license by date of hire.
- Must obtain and maintain a Texas Driver’s License within 90 days of hire.
- Employee must be bondable.
