Job Description
GENERAL PURPOSE
In training to acquire skills necessary in order to protect life and property by performing firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities.
ATTENTION: Fully certified Firefighter and Paramedic and/or EMT personnel can receive up to a $15,000 hiring bonus!! Certifications must be submitted to fd-hiring@killeentexas.gov to be eligible.
Essential Duties
In training to acquire skills necessary to perform firefighting activities including; driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
In training to acquire skills necessary to perform emergency aid activities including; rescue, administering emergency medical aid and providing other assistance as required.
Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, rescue emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
Operates radio and other communication equipment.
Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.
Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment.
Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment.
Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Various duties as assigned in order to complete training necessary for advancement to Fire & Rescue Officer/EMT.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Applicants must be 18 years of age, but not have reached their 36th birthday by the date of the hire.
- Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be able to read and write the English language and meet the Civil Service requirements of the City of Killeen.
- If hired, must maintain a residence not further than 45 minutes driving time from the City Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (EJT).
Certifications are not required, but preference may be given to applicants who have:
- Structural Firefighter Certification from Texas Commission on Fire Protection and Licensed/Certified EMT - Basic, Intermediate, Paramedic from Texas Department of State Health Services, or
- Paramedic from Texas Department of State Health Services without fire certification or
- Structural Firefighter Certification from Texas Commission on Fire Protection
Supplemental Information
The entry firefighter examination will be held on Sunday, May 11, 2025. You must score at least 70 on the examination for further consideration for the position. Applicants can directly purchase a Candidate Preparation Manual and/or a Practice Test HERE

- Basic Structural Firefighter Certification, or a letter from the Commission (if applicable)
