Job Description
Employee has no supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Duties
CORE COMPETENCIES:
Books, searches, and releases prisoners.
Maintains security in all areas of the holding facility.
Administers and supervises mealtime and visitation to prisoners.
Answers telephone calls and monitors jail access and egress.
Performs security patrols in jail area.
Works an assigned shift using judgment in deciding course of action, being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations.
Performs duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances.
Responds to and investigates incidents, crimes, disturbances, disputes, fights, abuse of drugs, etc. among prisoners.
Takes appropriate action, which includes, but is not limited to, physical restraint of unruly prisoners.
Prepares a variety of reports and records.
Maintains logs of prisoner activities and meals.
Perform maintenance duties such as sweeping and cleaning.
Responsible for answering questions from bondsmen, lawyers, family members and courts.
Prepares reports on injured and unruly prisoners.
Notarizes complaints and statements.
Safekeeping of prisoner property and issues receipts for such property.
Receives payment and issues receipts for bonds to release prisoners.
Photographs and fingerprints prisoners.
Maintains and reorders supply inventories.
Releases prisoner’s property to responsible person.
Coordinates activities with other officers or departments as needed; exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies, as needed and assigned.
Maintains assigned equipment, supplies and facilities.
Maintains contact with general public, court officials, and other City officials in the performance of operating activities.
Serves as a member of various employee committees.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; and,
- Six (6) months experience, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of and ability to learn modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
- Some skill and ability to learn operating the tools and equipment listed below.
- Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.
- Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions in emergency and non- emergency situations.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
Special Requirements:
- Must pass a thorough background investigation.
- Must have a valid driver's license by date of hire.
- Must obtain and maintain a Texas driver's license within 60 days of hire.
- Must successfully participate in defensive tactics training and refresher training.
- Must work an assigned shift, maybe required to work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
- Must be bondable.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, true color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
This position is a safety sensitive position
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. Occasional contact with diseased or combative persons.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
