Police Officer (Entry-Level/Lateral)

Union Status: Represented
Salary Range: Entry-Level $4,350 – $4,796 Monthly Lateral: $5,036 - $5,829 Monthly

Job Summary:
The Police Officer is responsible for maintaining public safety, enforcing laws and ordinances, preventing and investigating crimes, and fostering positive community relations. This role requires a commitment to ethical conduct, continuous learning, and effective communication.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field is preferred.
Experience:
- Entry-Level: No prior law enforcement experience required.
- Lateral: Minimum of 3 years of full-time sworn law enforcement experience.
Certification:
- Entry-Level: Must obtain certification from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) upon completion of the Basic Police Academy.
- Lateral: Must possess current law enforcement certification and be eligible for Oregon certification.
Age: Must be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment.
Citizenship: U.S. citizenship
Driver’s License: Valid Oregon driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Background:
- No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories.
- Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation.
Physical and Psychological Fitness:
- Ability to pass physical agility tests, medical examinations, and psychological assessments.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to think critically and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Proficiency in report writing and basic computer applications.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Commitment to ethical behavior and integrity.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in various environments, including office settings, patrol vehicles, and outdoor locations in all weather conditions.
- Exposure to potentially hazardous situations and materials.
- Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required.
