SOLID WASTE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
- Performs responsible semi-skilled work operating a refuse collection vehicle in the collection of solid waste;
- Does related work as required;
- Work is performed under regular supervision.
- Limited supervision is exercised over assigned crew members.
TYPICAL TASKS:
- Operates refuse collection truck picking up refuse from houses on a prescribed route;
- Operated hydraulic mechanisms for compressing and dumping refuse;
- Transports refuse to prescribed disposal areas;
- Drives and operates truck to collect household appliances, furniture and unusually large amounts of trash;
- Assists with snow and ice control as needed;
- Cleans refuse truck and equipment, performs preventative maintenance on equipment;
- Supervises personnel assigned to truck;
- Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- General knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment;
- General knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation;
- General knowledge of safe driving practices an occupational hazards of the work;
- Skill in the operation of automotive equipment;
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions;
- Ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment;
- Dependability.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the seventh grade and some experience in performance of heavy manual work and in the operation of heavy automotive equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License issued by the state of North Carolina. May require possession of a valid medical examination certificate required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
