What are the responsibilities and job description for the Planetarium Intern (BMP) position at City of Kingsport?
Supports the educational purpose and operation of the planetarium theater, observatories and related astronomy and space science outreach. Provides grade-appropriate school and public planetarium/astronomy programming. Assists in all aspects of the planetarium department.
• Assists with the daily operations of the planetarium theater, observatories and other related program facilities. • Provides astronomy and space science school and public programming. • Can learn to perform minor repair of planetarium and observatory equipment and computer infrastructure. • Performs other duties as assigned.
• Knowledge •Has a good level of knowledge and understanding of the principles of astronomy. Can learn educational techniques and the principles of the planetarium sciences. • Has good knowledge and understanding of, or can learn, celestial (day & night) observing techniques, outreach and equipment. • Can use Apple & PC computers and can learn specialized computers and software with proficiency. • Communication • Has a high ability to convey complex to basic astronomy concepts, orally and in writing, to students Pre-K through College and the general public. • Can work with and is very comfortable speaking to groups of persons, both small and large (100 ). • Work Environment • Possesses critical thinking skills. • Can think in three dimensions to understand astronomical concepts. • Can assist with special programming and events. • Can work with limited direct supervision. • Can establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the public. Can work in a very low-light environment, indoors and outdoors. • Can learn to use and program the planetarium interfaces to control a host of specialized A/V equipment. • Maintenance • Can perform mid-level troubleshooting with the planetarium, observatory and computer equipment. • Can learn to perform minor mechanical and electrical repair of audio/visual equipment under direct supervision.
High school or college student with the strong interest and basic knowledge of astronomy. The student must also have a strong technical/computer skill set. Candidate must possess a valid and current TN/VA driver’s license and have reliable transportation to get to work.
