Lead Pump and Motor Technician

The Lead Pump and Motor Maintenance Technician will be responsible for the daily and emergency preventative maintenance needs of the city including various pumps, motors, and controls, standby generators, and related systems. Areas of work may be at any of the water and wastewater facilities throughout the city. Potential candidates should have a strong background in electrical systems troubleshooting, motor diagnostics, and general maintenance of such systems. Technician must be able to exercise sound judgment in times of crisis, and effectively communicate with other city staff and elected officials as needed. The City of Kyle Public Works Department operations are performed 24/7, 365 days a year. This position is required to be on an on-call rotation and the candidate must live within 45 minutes of normal travel time to Kyle. This position serves as essential personnel based on the needs dictated by the Public Works Director or the designated representative and will require employees to return to work during inclement weather or emergency events.
  • Troubleshoot and correct electrical, mechanical, and piping problems as experience and training allows and as directed by supervisors.
  • Analyze, and repair or replace mechanical equipment (pumps, motors, submersibles, relays, breakers etc.) as necessary to complete required repairs.
  • Interact with vendors and obtain quotes for goods/services when necessary.
  • Assist in the installation of new utility system improvements and other water and wastewater utility related projects.
  • Help develop and maintain a preventative maintenance program for all water and wastewater facilities.
  • Responsible for keeping maintenance records up to date, including work orders and related forms.
  • Will operate a company vehicle and be responsible for the appearance, maintenance, and organization of vehicle and tool inventory.
  • Provides direction and training to lesser experienced staff as needed, acting as Lead role within the Division.
  • Respond to emergency calls as directed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in municipal water and wastewater maintenance. Applicable experience in a similar field will be considered.
  • Equivalent combination of training and/or experience which evidences a comprehensive knowledge of required job duties and expectations.
  • Class D TCEQ Water Operator License, Collections I, or Class D Wastewater Treatment Operator license or must be obtained within six (6) months of the hire date.
  • Class C TCEQ Groundwater Treatment Operator, Collections II, or Class C Wastewater Treatment Operator license required within 2 years of hire.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Texas Driver’s License within 30 days of date of hire.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Four (4) years’ experience in municipal water and wastewater maintenance. Applicable experience in a similar field will be considered.
  • Two (2) years' experience in a lead role.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • General operational knowledge, experience, and/or familiarity with all Public Works machinery and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft programs including: Office 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher. 
  • Ability to troubleshoot lift station control panel issues and should have a good understanding of signal control power as well.
  • Ability to operate an overhead boom lift safely and responsibly. 
  • Ability to interpret engineered plans to assist with the design and construction of City of Kyle water and wastewater facilities.
  • Works with other maintenance employees well and is open to taking direction and positive criticism.
  • Written Communication – able to read and interpret written information such as documents of safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to draft routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical Skills – Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Organizations Support – Follow policies and procedures; develop and maintain standard operating procedures as needed.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 115 pounds. Successful employees will also be able to tolerate working at heights above ground on ladders or scaffolding as needed to effect repairs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Any corrective eyewear required while operating a motor vehicle must be worn at all times while working.
