The Mental Health Civilian Responder - GRANT Position - assigned to the Police Department's Mental Health Crisis Response Unit plays a critical role in providing crisis intervention, assessment, and support to individuals experiencing mental health crises. Working collaboratively with law enforcement officers and other crisis response team members, the Mobile Crisis Care Coordinator delivers specialized mental health services aimed at de-escalating crises, promoting stabilization, and connecting individuals with appropriate follow-up care.

1. Crisis Intervention and Assessment:

  • Respond promptly to emergency calls involving individuals in crisis and provide on-scene assessment and intervention.

  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments to evaluate the individual's mental status, risk factors, and support needs.

  • Collaborate with law enforcement officers and other crisis response team members to develop and implement crisis intervention plans tailored to the individual's needs.

2. Supportive Guidance:

  • Provide crisis counseling, emotional support, and psychoeducation to individuals in crisis and their families.

  • Utilize evidence-based therapeutic techniques to help individuals cope with acute distress and develop coping skills.

  • Facilitate communication and conflict resolution between individuals in crisis and law enforcement officers, as needed.

3. Referral and Follow-up:

  • Coordinate with community mental health agencies, hospitals, and other service providers to ensure timely access to follow-up care and resources.

  • Assist individuals in crisis with accessing mental health treatment, substance abuse services, housing assistance, and other support services.

  • Conduct follow-up contacts and referrals to monitor the individual's progress and provide ongoing support as needed.

4. Training and Consultation:

  • Provide training and consultation to law enforcement officers on mental health issues, crisis intervention techniques, and de-escalation strategies.

  • Serve as a resource on mental health-related matters within the Police Department and the community.

  • Collaborate with other mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers, to enhance the effectiveness of crisis response efforts.

5. Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of assessments, interventions, and referrals in accordance with departmental policies and regulations.

  • Prepare written reports and documentation for court proceedings, as needed, in compliance with legal and ethical standards.

  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and other relevant privacy laws governing the handling of protected health information.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Performs all other duties as duly assigned by the Chief of Police or Designee.

Bachelor’s degree or higher in psychology, social work, or a related field from an accredited university or institution.

  • Demonstrated experience working in crisis intervention, emergency mental health services, or a similar setting.

  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices in mental health treatment, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed care.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish rapport with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with law enforcement officers and other community stakeholders.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

  • Commitment to upholding ethical standards and maintaining confidentiality in accordance with professional codes of conduct and legal requirements.

  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Masters degree or higher in psychology, social work, or a related field from an accredited university or institution.

· Current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a mental health clinician (e.g., Licensed Master Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

· Judgment and Decision Making-Weighing the relative costs and benefits of a potential action.

· Writing and Information Gathering - Communicating effectively with others in writing as indicated by the needs of the audience and knowing how to find information.

· Critical Thinking – Using logic and analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches.

· Able to achieve and maintain Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) clearance, including passing a comprehensive background investigation.

· This position requires frequent travel within the jurisdiction served by the Police Department.

· Work environment may include exposure to hazardous conditions, including violence, trauma, and infectious diseases.

· This position may involve exposure to emotionally challenging situations and individuals in crisis.

· The Mobile Crisis Care Coordinator may be required to work in various settings, including emergency rooms, crisis stabilization units, and community-based facilities.

Salary : $61,526 - $75,984
