What are the responsibilities and job description for the Arborist Intern position at City of La Crosse?
The City of La Crosse Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department is currently accepting applications for an arborist intern. This is a “for credit” internship with mentoring provided by a Certified City of La Crosse staff Arborist. This position qualifies as summer field experience toward a forestry program degree.
• Start & end dates flexible • Working hours flexible ranging from 8 to 40 hours per week • Wage for this temporary summer seasonal position is $13–$23 per hour • This position does not acquire benefits
Job Description: The selectee of this position must develop situational awareness on worksites, learn to work with equipment and tools safely, work toward proper tree identification, perform proper tree trimming/cutting/
planting adhering with modern Best Management Practices for tree care. • Requires working outdoors in adverse weather conditions • Perform a wide variety of tasks in support of a comprehensive urban forestry program • Work either alone or as a crew member • Planting/stump removal • Assist in detection of tree pest, disease, or infection • Safely operate chainsaws/chippers/stump grinders/other powered equipment • Operate trucks/tractors/trailers • Clean/perform operator level maintenance on tools/equipment/vehicles for job
Responsibilities: • Tree trimming/cutting/felling/removal using industry Best Management Practices • Load/unload trucks with logs, stumps, brush, and debris and/or feeds brush into a woodchipper • Utilize best management practices to safeguard other employees and public from jobsite hazards in and around work area • Inspect tools, truck, and other work equipment • Request repair or replacement equipment, when necessary • Maintain good housekeeping on equipment and at work locations • Perform other related work as assigned
Qualifications/Experience:
• Enrollment in a 2- or 4-year program in the study of Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, Forestry/related discipline
• Valid Wisconsin driver’s license or other state license acceptable to Wisconsin
• 2 or more years of experience using a chainsaw
• Experience working with a chipper machine
• Working knowledge of tree trimming procedures and tree identification
• Ability to intermittently sit, stand, walk, bend and lift 50-pound loads
• Ability to work indoors or outdoors in all types of weather
• Ability to haul and back trailers
• Ability to communicate effectively/interact positively, maintain a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and report for work regularly and punctually
