DEFINITION

The Mechanic Assistant is the entry-level position for Equipment Services Division. The Mechanic Assistant is responsible for inspection, assessments and repairs of damaged or worn tires on fleet vehicles. The Mechanic Assistant is also required to perform light-duty mechanical repairs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general direction from the Equipment Services Supervisor.
Receives technical or functional supervision from Senior Mechanics and Mechanics.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :

Change and repair tires, tubes, valve stems, lock rings, and a variety of other minor mechanical parts.

Clean and wash motorized equipment; wash windows, tighten bolts, sweep, and otherwise maintain shop and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.

Assist in inspection of all gauges, belts, filters, hydraulic systems, and a variety of other equipment as part of a preventive maintenance schedule

Assist in light-duty mechanical repairs.

Pick up and deliver personnel, parts, and vehicles.

Perform related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

For indefinite periods of time - mobility within an office and field environment; exposure to fume / odor, dust / mite, and mechanical hazards; exposure to constant noise; standing; walking; squatting; stooping; sorting; twisting body; sitting; kneeling; crawling; climbing; reading; decision making; reaching above shoulder level; pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; seeing; using both hands for simple and firm grasping; clarity of hearing; communicating clearly and effectively, in person and by two-way radio; fine finger manipulation; operating a motor vehicle and all types of equipment through city traffic.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of :

Automotive equipment tire repair and maintenance. Basic mechanical tools and repair methods.

Diagnostic tools and wheel balancing equipment.

Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the workplace.

Ability to :

Assist in performing a variety of minor repair and maintenance tasks on heavy and light equipment.

Lift and move heavy equipment in the cleaning and maintenance of the shop area.

Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.

Use and care of tools used in equipment repair work.

Perform basic calculations.

Understand diagrams, schematics and procedures.

Operate a personal computer, calculator, two-way radio, and telephone.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

One year of experience as an automotive or equipment mechanic; tire experience preferred.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

High School Diploma or GED. Possession of a valid Texas Driver's License; and ability to obtain within six months, a valid Texas Class B CDL.
