DEFINITION
To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled gardening, landscape and equipment maintenance and custodial duties in the development, maintenance, and repair of park and playground facilities.
DISTINGUISHED CHARACTERISTIC
This is the journey level class in the Park Maintenance series. Positions assigned to this class can be distinguished from lower level classes in the series by assuming assigned work with a minimum of supervision. The Park Maintenance Worker II is distinguished from the Senior Park Maintenance Worker in that the latter provides technical advice on policies and procedures and the assignment of work on a priority basis.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from higher level park maintenance staff.
May exercise technical or functional supervision over less experienced landscape maintenance personnel.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Mow, trim, weed, fertilize, and water parks, playgrounds, and medians.
- Operate power mowers, edgers, sprayers, and other equipment.
- Rake leaves, clean walks, fields, swimming pool and other facilities. Maintain and prepare athletic fields and other recreational facilities. Maintain plantings and grounds, recreation and play areas.
- Spade and otherwise prepare ground around plants and shrubs, including mixing and applying fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides.
- Plant and maintain trees, flowers and shrubs. Remove and dispose of trees and stumps.
- Pick up rubbish and paper, and perform general grounds cleaning
- Drive vehicles used to transport materials, tools, and equipment as required. Assist in moving and installing park and recreational equipment.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on mowing equipment and hand and power tools used in the work.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
For indefinite periods of time - mobility within an office and field environment; exposure to fumes, odors, dust / mites, electrical, mechanical and chemical hazards; exposure to extreme cold, heat, temperature swings and constant noise; walking; twisting body; working in trenches; stooping; standing; squatting; sitting; seeing; kneeling; grasping; climbing; cleaning; reading; decision making; reaching above shoulder level; pushing and pulling up to 200 pounds, lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds; using both hands for simple and firm grasping; clarity of hearing; fine finger manipulation; operation of a tree spade, stump grinder, chipper, mower deck, tractor, dump truck, 45 passenger bus, weed eater, lawn mower, blower, and a variety of hand tools; operating a motor vehicle through city traffic.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Two years of increasingly responsible park and landscape maintenance work and possession of a High School Diploma or GED, is required.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months, a valid Texas Class "B" Commercial Driver's License.
