Lead and supervise children in the Summer Day Camp Program. Duties include providing direction, guidance and assistance to students; effectively handling student discipline situations; ensuring student safety and security; communicating with parents, staff, teachers and program manager; opening, closing and securing building; preparing snacks; cleaning program areas; recording attendance; assisting sick or injured children; assisting with supervision of staff; and creating new activities in the areas of crafts, sports, games, special events, and field trips for 5 to 12 year olds.
Must be at least 18 years of age to apply for this position.The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
- Supervise, guide and assist students during crafts, art projects, games and other activities to provide developmental stimulation and meet the children's needs.
- Monitor student behavior during activities, effectively handle student discipline situations and encourage and support positive behavior.
- Observe the children and always monitor the security of the building to ensure the children's health and safety. Provide general First Aid and distribute medication to children as directed.
- Comply with state licensing requirements under the direction of the program coordinator.
- Create interesting and educational lesson plans and implement the activities while engaging in participation with the children.
- Communicate with parents, staff and teachers, regarding children and/or program issues.
- Record attendance and contact parents regarding absent students. Check identification of those picking up children.
- Prepare and keep inventory of snacks and clean the areas after use.
- Open and close program/building rooms and secures rooms/building at the end of the program by locking doors and turning off lights.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
SKILL: Skill in understanding and responding to customer needs. Skill in the operation of program equipment. Skill in the operation of copier and fax machine, telephone, mobile or two-way radio, and various sports equipment used in recreation programs. Skill in administering First Aid and CPR.
ABILITY: Swim and participate with children in swimming related activities; maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job; manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions; manage multiple priorities; diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations; promote and follow City and Department policies and procedures; communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds; recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate staff.
TRAINING: Must complete current state required annual continuing education (presently 15 hours minimum) related to one or more of the following: child growth and development, health and safe environment, developmentally appropriate practices, guidance, family relationships, cultural and individual diversity and professionalism.
EXPERIENCE: Each program leader must be at least 18 years of age, demonstrate ability to work with children, and must meet the following qualifications:
- Complete the Department-approved course in injury prevention.
- Complete the Department-approved course in playground safety for School-Aged Child
- Care Centers. This requirement does not apply to day camps that do not regularly use a playground.; and
- Must have at least three (3) months (460 hours) of full-time or equivalent part-time satisfactory and verifiable experience with school-age children.
- Driving Positions - Must be 21 years of age with a valid Colorado driver's license and a good driving record.
- Criminal background check required for hire and reference checks will be conducted.
- CPR/AED, First Aid and Universal Precautions certifications required within 30 days of hire.
- Must have at least three (3) months (460 hours) of full-time or equivalent part-time satisfactory and verifiable experience with school-age children.
