What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Park Ranger & Junior Park Ranger position at City of Lafayette, Colorado?
SENIOR PARK RANGER:
Perform unskilled and semi-skilled work in supervising crews of youth employed in the Junior Park Ranger Program. You must be at least 18 years of age to apply for the Senior Park Ranger position.
JUNIOR PARK RANGER:
Perform routine non-technical Parks maintenance. Our Junior Ranger Program is expected to run from May 27th through August 8th. The work hours are Monday- Friday 7:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Junior Park Ranger is an excellent job opportunity for 14- to 17-year-olds to gain job experience.
Parks Seasonal Employee Bonus Program
The City of Lafayette Parks Department incentivizes seasonal employees to provide exceptional customer service, consistently work all scheduled hours and refer qualified candidates for seasonal openings.
- Parks seasonal staff members will receive a monthly bonus of $150 as an incentive for reliability and commitment if they work all scheduled shifts on any given month.
- Parks seasonal staff members will receive a bonus of $200 by referring a qualified candidate for any seasonal position within our division if we hire that candidate.
Scheduled hours are defined as any work hours that a staff member is scheduled by their supervisor to work. Exceptions to hours worked are:
- A supervisor sends an employee home due to inclement weather, the employee will still be bonus eligible.
- A supervisor sends an employee home due to a workplace injury the employee will still be bonus eligible.
- An employee uses accrued sick leave will still be bonus eligible.
- Employees who take unplanned days off or vacations in any given month will not be bonus eligible for that month.
All approved bonuses will be paid on the first pay period of the following month. (For example, an employee qualifies for the referral bonus in May their bonus will be on first paycheck issued in June.)
Please note that all seasonal employee bonuses must be approved by the Parks Superintendent. The terms and conditions of our bonus program are subject to change at any time without prior notice. We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or cancel any aspect of the bonus program, including but not limited to eligibility criteria, bonus amounts, and payout methods, at our discretion. By participating in the bonus program, you acknowledge and agree to these potential changes.
The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:SENIOR PARK RANGER:
- Prepare a weekly work schedule for the ranger crew.
- Transport junior park rangers from a specified location to the appropriate job site and return them to their original pick-up site at the end of their work-day.
- Supervise and assist the junior rangers in 1) daily trash clean-up of each City park and some designated open space areas, 2) emptying trash cans, and 3) cutting and pulling weeds in park areas, open space areas, and flower/shrub beds.
- Evaluate each junior ranger's performance during and after his/her work session.
- Assist in the evaluation of the Junior Park Ranger Program, including written recommendations for improving the program.
- Ensure the proper maintenance and cleaning of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
- Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to appropriate person.
- Perform all duties conforming to appropriate safety and security standards.
- Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Use all required safety equipment.
- Perform related duties as required.
JUNIOR PARK RANGER:
- Picks up litter in park areas.
- Cleans public facilities, shelters, BBQ's.
- Pulls weeds.
- Empties trash cans.
- Performs related duties as required.
SENIOR PARK RANGER:
KNOWLEDGE: Basic knowledge of the City of Lafayette Park system. Basic knowledge of Lafayette Park maintenance procedures. Basic knowledge of good safety practices.
SKILL: Skill in operation of a pick-up truck as required by the position.
ABILITY: Ability to perform manual labor; operate the equipment and tools required by the position; work from broad direction with limited supervision; supervise a junior park ranger crew; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public; work well with varied and demanding people; work well with people from culturally diverse backgrounds; communicate clearly and concisely in English, verbally and in writing; understand and follow written and oral instructions and procedures; organize activities in order to complete tasks in accordance with priorities, address multiple demands, or meet deadlines; organize tasks and working environment to maximize efficiency; focus attention on tasks, which may be complex, routine, or repetitive, without losing concentration or becoming distracted by external activities; adapt to interruptions, equipment failures, unusual demands, or changing priorities; employ and enforce safety practices and procedures; establish effective work schedules; and work a variety of hours.
TRAINING: None
EXPERIENCE: Experience supervising youth in a like setting, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
JUNIOR PARK RANGER:
KNOWLEDGE: Basic knowledge of safety practices and procedures
SKILL: Ability to get along with co-workers and follow verbal directions
ABILITY: Ability to perform light manual labor, including lifting and stooping, for extended periods of time under all weather conditions; follow written and oral instructions; work well with people from culturally diverse backgrounds, establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public; employ safety practices and procedures; and communicate clearly and concisely in English, verbally and in writing.
TRAINING: No requirements
EXPERIENCE: No requirements; preferred volunteer or other experience which indicates the ability to perform the essential functions of this position, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
SENIOR PARK RANGER:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record for continued employment.
New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: oral board, reference checks, driving record check through DMV, arrest record check and any other background investigation that we deem necessary.
Must be 14 - 17 years of age on the date of hire; prefer Lafayette residents.
May be restricted to age requirements as specified by FLSA:
Ages 14 - 15 limited to:
School in Session (06/01 - Labor Day) – 3 hours/day; 18 hours/week between 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM
School not in Session – 8 hours/day; 40 hours/week, no later than 9:00 PM.
