Backflow/Cross Connection Inspector
LOCATION:

HOURS:
8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., M-F
SALARY:
$2,428.50 – 2,796.65 bi-weekly
DESCRIPTION:
Meets with Water Works customers and arranges inspections of existing and proposed plumbing systems.
Remains current on approved backflow assemblies and installation recommendations. Conducts meetings with
contractors concerning work in progress and with salesmen offering product options. Insures proper handling
of distribution system, along with disinfection procedures. Ability to remain sensitive to customer issues and
confidential information. Makes inspections on construction projects in progress. Preform all functions listed
in construction area of Water Works. Communicate effectively with the Water Works Superintendent, Assistant
Superintendent and Chief of Distribution on program affairs. Generates notices to install, test or repair backflow
assemblies. Maintains a working knowledge of DSL and IDEM regulations pertaining to backflow and cross
connection. Track all data concerning manufacturer, installation, USC approval and test results of assemblies
in system. Generates other necessary paperwork as required. Assist in any other Water Works area as
needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or GED. Maintain an IDEM Cross Connection Control Device Tester Certification.
Obtain and maintain a DSL Distribution Service Operator Certification. Obtain and maintain an Indiana CDL
Class B Driver’s License within 9 months of hire. Ability to organize, make reports, prioritize projects. Thorough
knowledge of confined space procedures. Ability to follow general departmental work methods and procedures.
Ability to use computer programs to record information and generate documents. Ability to plan and organize
workflow and ongoing activities of the Program. Thorough understanding of EPA, IDEM and other agency
guidelines that effect distribution system operations. Ability to identify and classify cross connections or
backflow hazards. Working knowledge of state statues and local ordinances. Knowledge of traffic laws that
apply to light and heavy vehicles. Ability to demonstrate leadership and problem solving. Ability to work
tactfully and effectively with general public. Ability to read blueprints and construction plans. Ability to enter
underground vaults and confined spaces. Thorough understanding of dynamics and principals of water
distribution.
