SUMMARY
Under general supervision, this individual is responsible for the operation of heavy construction type equipment used in constructing, ditching and other maintenance such as storm drainage work, etc. Work is usually assigned and monitored by a Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and/or RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Drive and/or operate equipment characterized as being large or heavy equipment, such as a Motor Grader, driver and operator of grade-all, bull dozer, and large truck-mounted combination jet/vacuum machine, heavy duty garbage trucks (Side Loaders & Cherry pickers).
- May operate smaller and less complex equipment as needs dictate.
- Provide routine preventative maintenance to vehicles and equipment as required. Report serious mechanical difficulties for repair.
- Adjust equipment as needed for specialized operations requiring a high degree of accuracy.
- Clear and dig drainage ditches, cuts driveways and roadways.
- Perform physical labor as required.
- May lead a crew.
- As Lead Bus Operator, responsible for dispensing fleet, providing training/refresher training to Operator I and providing data to the Transit Operations Supervisor.
- Perform other assigned duties.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May directly supervise 2-3 employees classified as General Maintenance Workers in various equipment operations. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees and directing work.

- Possess skills in the operation of complex, heavy mobile equipment.
- Good knowledge of particular characteristics, operating procedures and maintenance of machines and equipment operated.
- Ability to supervise a small crew in simple operations. Good knowledge of safety policies.
- Ability to organize daily assignments of work to be accomplished. Ability to understand oral and written assignments.
- Ability to perform all duties of Large Equipment Operator I.
- Regular prompt attendance is an essential function to this position.
- The ability to get along and promote a harmonious working environment with vendors, supervisors, citizens, and co-workers is an essential function of this position.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree GED required. Six months to one year experience as a Large Equipment Operator I; or equivalent combination of education or experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with the general public or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurements, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
A valid Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.) with appropriate endorsement is required.
