Job Summary
The EMT provides quality patient care in the pre-hospital setting, including assessment of illness, and/or injury, administering emergency care, and transportation services. This position responds within the scope of training under operation guidelines, and physician medical control. EMT duties are performed under the supervision of the field paramedic and under limited supervision of the Ambulance Director.

Specific Job Duties
- Responds to 911 medical response and inter-facility transports.
Assesses the medical needs of the sick or injured patient, and provides immediate care as allowed by the department's medical director and within the EMT's scope of training. - Operates the ambulance according to the state statutes and department policies; provides for safe transportation to and from the scene and/or hospital; demonstrates an understanding of “due regard.”
Coordinates patient care and communicates effectively with peers, patients, families, bystanders, other responders, and other health care providers. - Assists the paramedic with administering care as directed, and administers care, if team lead, as directed by physician or emergency department; identifies diagnostic signs that require communications with facility.
Maintains contact with dispatch and/or hospital to provide information or obtain assistance in treating medical conditions; maintains contact with other agencies such as police, sheriff, air ambulance, and first reconsiders as needed. - Assesses nature and extend of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures.
Administers medications as authorized by the Medical Director or under the direction of the field paramedic. - Provides for a safe patient care environment, including proper cleaning and decontamination of equipment; ensures equipment is accounted for and in working condition for each shift; encourages safe work habits of peers; demonstrates proper lifting and moving techniques in patient handling.
Demonstrates competency for department equipment; attends mandatory meetings as determined by leadership; completes certification requirements annually. - Extricates victims of entrapment with the help of first responders; assesses nature and extent of illness or injury; takes pulse and blood pressure; visually observes changes in skin color; established priority for emergency care and renders appropriate care; may administer fluid replacement as directed by physician. EMT may administer variance drugs.
Lifts and carries sick and injured persons to the ambulance for transport to the medical facility. - Uses equipment such as defibrillator when performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation in a pulseless, non-breathing patient. May perform procedures for airway control to include insertion of King Airway and ventilatory support; provides treatment for prevention and maintenance of signs and symptoms of shock in patient.
Completes patient care reports in an efficient and expedient manner and ensures all reports contain the proper content for billing purposes. Patient care reports are also posted to report processor following each call. - Actively participates in the quality assurance process; completes required documentation changes, additions, and addendums, in a timely manner.
- Maintains ambulances in a state of readiness for emergency calls.
Replaces supplies, sends used supplies for sterilization, and decontaminates the interior of the ambulance. - Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of vehicles as needed.
Demonstrates good stewardship of resources and cleaning of vehicles as appropriate. - Performs a variety of administrative and training duties.
Maintains medical service records as requested or required by department policy. - Attends and participates in departmental training drills and training sessions as directed.
Ensures new employee orientation remains a priority as outlined in the orientation manual, and provides orientation to new employees in conjunction with the Director, EMT Administrative Assistant, and other staff. - Assists with various office and administrative tasks as requested by the Assistant Ambulance Director.
Performs other duties as assigned to include station duties, home visits, and other duties as assigned by the Director.
Qualifications
- Thorough knowledge of emergency medical services administration, practices and procedures;
- Thorough knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to emergency medical and 911 services;
- Thorough knowledge of the principles of anatomy and physiology;
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency care, including diagnosis, proper treatment and transportation;
- Thorough knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in the emergency care of patients and victims of accidents;
- Thorough knowledge of the street and road system and physical layout of the city and primary service areas;
- Skill in diagnosing a victim's condition and applying emergency medical care;
- Ability to oversee the work of crew members providing basic life support services;
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
- Ability to keep records and prepare reports;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Board members, associates, physicians, patients and their families, other emergency service agencies, and the general public.
Education and Experience
- Successful completion of a state or US DOT approved EMT course
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Good documentation skills
Certification and License
- Current registration as an EMT with the National Registry of EMT's
- Current certification as an EMT with the Minnesota EMSRB
- Current BLS CPR Certification through American Heart Association
- Current state-issued driver's license (with acceptable driving history)
- Emergency vehicle operator training - CEVO III or EVOC*
- ICS 700*
