This position will focus on front desk operations and rental inquires at the City's Community Center. The incumbents may be scheduled up to 20 hours per week and need to be able to work weekend and evening hours. Position will close on February 17, 2025. This is an "at-will" position.
Under general supervision, plans, organizes, supervises, and implements a community service program within a specific section of the Management Services Department; and performs a variety of responsible technical duties relative to assigned program functions.
The eligibility list established from this recruitment many be used to fill future Recreation Specialist vacancies as they occur throughout the Community Services division.The incumbents may be scheduled up to 20 hours per week.

Examples of Duties

- Plans, organizes, supervises, and implements a community service program within a specific section of the Community Services Division.
- May conduct skateboarding classes at the City’s Skatepark; assists in planning and organizing Skatepark events; enforces safety procedures at the Skatepark.
- May plan, staff, supervise, coordinate, and implement a program requiring developing an activity-based curriculum of age appropriate social, educational, and recreational activities; organizes transportation services; coordinates excursions, off-site activities, and special events; serves as on-site supervisor to ensure safety, well-being, and accountability for school age children.
- May coordinate and supervise operation of a multi-use City facility including scheduling City programs and contract classes; may develop and maintain complex scheduling and permitting activities.
- Coordinates tours; identifies event set-up and equipment needs; coordinates customer special requests; determines staffing requirements; prepares reports on condition of facility and participation.
- Serves as liaison to facility rental patrons to provide facility information and to explain and implement facility rules.
- Responds to and resolves inquires and concerns from participants, parents, facility patrons, and general public.
- Identifies maintenance and safety problems; submits maintenance orders and coordinates repair work; performs minor maintenance tasks.
- Participates in program budget preparation; prepares cost estimates for budget recommendations; submits justifications for assigned programs; monitors expenditures.
- Enforces City policies, procedures, and applicable state licensing regulations to assure for the safety and welfare of participates; responds to emergencies and provides appropriate first aid or other assistance.
- Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews work of part-time staff; participates in selection and performs performance reviews; provides technical assistance and in-service training to staff within assigned program.
- Performs a variety of general administrative duties such as compiling program statistics, and preparing simple reports, records, memoranda, and correspondence; reviews documents filled out by patrons; collects and accounts for fees.
- Utilizes computer applications relative to work assignment including Facility/Class Reservation System (Class), word processing, databases, and budget programs.
- Performs related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:
- Basic objectives, methods, and techniques of planned recreation and leisure activities for youth and adults;
- Effective instructional techniques; arts and crafts and/or indoor and outdoor games and sports for children.
- Safe work practices.
- Group recreational and social activities; basic rules, regulations, and equipment used in various recreational activities.
- Principles and practices of record keeping.
Ability to:
- Plan and organize recreation programs for children or adults; influence, direct, and/or train others, including the ability to act in a lead worker capacity; advise and interpret on how to apply policies and standards to specific situations in a caring and concerned customer service manner.
- Utilize good judgment in analyzing situations carefully and adopting effective courses of action; maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, residents and community organizations; work and interact with youth in a manner that fosters open communication and elicits cooperation.
- Enforce facility rules in a positive, professional manner and take appropriate corrective action when necessary.
- Work variable hours, weekends, and/or holidays; work independently with limited supervision.
- Utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information, such as regulations, accident/incident reports, time sheets, schedules, performance evaluations, budgets, customer complaints, training materials, educational curricula, correspondence and general operating manuals
- Maintain a safe work environment; appear for work on time.
- Manage stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; follow directions from a supervisor; maintain records; understand and follow posted work rules and procedures; accept constructive criticism.

Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements:
- A valid Class C California Driver's License and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's Vehicle Insurance Policy.
- Possess or have the ability to obtain First Aid, CPR and AED certification.
Education/Training/Experience:
Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, supplemented by college-level course work in recreation, business administration, public administration or a closely related field.
- Three seasons experience as a Recreation Leader, including some leadership/supervisory experience, or within a specialized program area.

The employee primarily works in a standard office setting with extensive public contact and frequent interruptions. The employee may also work in outdoor field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, solvents, toxic agents, chemicals, gases, electrical currents, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; exposure to hazardous traffic conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain.
