GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs manual skilled work in the care and maintenance of backflow prevention devices for domestic drinking water as well as the maintenance of water distribution.
an employee in this classification is responsible for running a cross-connection control program. Work also includes the responsibility of coordinating the installation, testing and maintenance of all types of Backflow Prevention Assemblies; and maintaining all computerized records pertaining to a the cross-connection control program as set forth under State and Federal Safe drinking water laws.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the close supervision of the Chief Water Operator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Ability to test and repair all types of backflow prevention assemblies.
Maintains all records for each backflow prevention assembly to assure calibration as performed in accordance with law.
Assists in performing routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
Performs commercial code compliance on all alteration inspections for the City's Utilities Department.
Monitors all installations of backflow prevention assemblies on City and private water connections. Notify plumbers and contractors of the legal requirements, inspects old installations and maintains a record.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
(A) Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and some experience in heavy manual labor and in the use of tools.
(B) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A) Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, utility construction and repair activities.
(B) Knowledge of Federal, State, County and City codes regarding cross-connection control. Knowledge of the installation, testing and maintenance of all types of backflow prevention assemblies. Knowledge of internal plumbing and fire systems of commercial structures. Knowledge of all types of water distribution and sewer collection systems. Knowledge of occupational hazards of the trade and of proper use of safety procedures.
(C) Skilled in the operation of tools and equipment;
(D) Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly. Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, department officials and the general public. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to perform simple math calculations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid Florida Driver's license, or ability to obtain one. Current Certification as a Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester as well as Repair and Maintenance Technician’s license or the ability to one.
