GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of skilled and non-skilled field work locating underground utilities through the use of utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings and electronic equipment; marking the location of underground utility lines and valves in the right of way and utility easement. Work involves the accurate marking of underground utilities to prevent damage by others which may cause interruption of utility services, construction delays, or endanger the health, safety and welfare of the general public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Identify, locate and mark the location of subsurface city utilities in order to minimize accidental damage or disruption of service due to construction excavation activities.
Locates underground utilities through the use of utility maps, as-built civil engineering drawings, G.I.S. information, and various pipe and electronic locating equipment.
Marks the location of underground utilities utilizing stakes, flags, and/or paint.
Reviews maps and as-built drawings to calculate distances and to determine the location of underground utilities.
Meets with parties requesting locates, when required, to coordinate locates with other utilities to receive or present information regarding complications or possible conflicts.
Maintains a record of all utility locates and prepares various reports, forms and memos to document work completed, problems encountered and/or resolved.
Verifies field information and notifies the designated City Departments regarding updates and corrections.
Investigates and prepares detailed written documentation on excavation(s) which results in damage to underground utilities.
Provide support and backup to the collection system staff.
Cross-trains and works with other department staff as assigned.
Monitors new construction to familiarize oneself with the location of new utilities.
Operates and maintains mechanical and electronic equipment.
Qualifications
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
(A) Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and
(B) two (2) experience in underground or utility construction-related work involving some responsibility for reading and interpreting project plans, blueprints, quarter section and plat maps or related materials. Some experience using electronic locating devices to locate multiple City utilities.
(C) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A) Knowledge of electronic metal detection equipment operating procedures; basic markings and symbols used on quarter section and plat maps, project plans, and blue prints. Basic computer use and software application; marking procedures and practices used in the Blue Stake Utility Locating Program and the general layout of the city’s utility system including water, wastewater, street lights and traffic signals.
(B) Skilled in operation of tools and equipment.
(C) Ability to establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and the general public. Ability to work in heavy and hazardous traffic conditions utilizing safety devices; communicate vital information via telephone or two-way radio and maintain safe operation of motor vehicle and safety related.
Salary : $40,435 - $56,659
