The City of Lake Worth Beach invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of Captain Lifeguard-Training Officer.
This is a Full-Time, Non-Exempt position based on a 40-hour work week with an hourly rate TBD.
Pay Rate: TBD based on qualifications and experience
This position is part of the (PEU) Public Employees Union collective bargaining agreement. The individual in this position will work at the Leisure Services building located at 10 South Ocean Blvd, Lake Worth Beach, FL 33460.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Chief, the Captain supervises, directs, and evaluates day to day operations of lifeguard staff. Processes employees concerns and problems including, counseling, and disciplining. Assist in conducting interviews and making hiring recommendations; administers performance tests to prospective employees and prepares and implements lifeguard trainings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises all subordinate personnel in day-to-day lifeguarding operations at the Casino Complex.
- Performs lifeguard functions and monitors beach/swimming areas; monitors safety and welfare of visitors, swimmers, and other individuals; ensures compliance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, and safety guidelines; cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas, conditions, or activities; assists in locating missing persons; handles situations involving excessive noise, disruptive behavior, potential violence, or other problems; monitors crowd activities and initiates crowd control as needed; takes appropriate disciplinary action to maintain a peaceful environment.
- Conducts and/or assists with water rescues of swimmers in danger of drowning; administers basic life support (CPR) and first aid as needed; obtains emergency medical assistance when necessary; coordinates medical/rescue activities with emergency medical personnel.
- Prepares and instructs all training for personnel and maintains records/logs of all lifeguarding personnel certification and trainings
- Reports accidents or injuries; completes incident reports or reviews incident reports completed by subordinate staff; submits reports to supervisor.
- Provides for relief breaks from tower-to-tower
- Fills out daily logbook
- Assure proper flags and conditions are being flown and represented on conditions board
- Assumes Chiefs Duties in Chiefs absence
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Inspects/monitors beach areas to identify potential hazards, such as dangerous debris, broken glass, or other situations that may cause injury to patrons/swimmers
- Provides assistance to injured wildlife.
- Performs general/clerical tasks, which may include answering telephones calls, making copies, checking Emails;
- Assist Chief and/or Aquatics Manager with interviewing potential staff
- Performs minor carpentry and janitorial tasks.
- Performs other related duties as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
- Ability to Effectively supervise large staff and work closely with the public
- Knowledge of Basic Life Support procedures; lifesaving, resuscitative techniques and actions, along with beach operations.
- Ability to care for patients with traumatic injuries in highly stressful situations.
- Ability to run and swim with strength and endurance.
- Ability to perform emergency medical procedures
- Ability to direct recreational activities in the ocean environment.
- Ability to perform job functions in stressful situations.
- Skill in using Semi-Automatic Defibrillators in cardiac emergencies.
- Proficiency in performing CPR Professional Rescuer.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED; (3) years previous experience involving lifeguard operations, swimming, supervision, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Must complete the beach performance test in under 30 minutes (¼ mile run, 600yd swim, 600yd paddle).
- Ability to safely enter water from a height over 25ft (pier jump)
- Requires weekends and holidays.
MINIMUM REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification
- Must obtain USLA Training Office Certification within one year of employment
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding instructors certificate or equivalent.
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding or equivalent.
- American Heart Association and/or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR Certificate
- Valid State of Florida Driver's License
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:
- Pre- Employment Screening: Must possess adequate vision, hearing acuity, physical ability and stamina to perform the duties of an open water lifeguard as documented by a medical doctor, or the doctor’s designated physician’s assistant or ARNP (advanced registered Nurse Practitioner)
