Job Title: Maintenance Worker I
Department: Public Works/Water FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Job description statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this job title. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.

GENERAL SUMMARY

Performs work necessary for the maintenance and repair of water mains, fire hydrants, wells, pump stations, customer water and sewer service lines, lift stations, and sewer mains ensuring all safety regulations are followed to maintain public health.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

This position receives general supervision Public Works Superintendent (Water). This position does not supervise any other positions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Assists in maintenance and repair operations including, but not limited to, water leaks, meter change outs, lift stations, water and sewer lines, wells, pumps and other operations related to water and sewer operations
Operates equipment used in maintenance and repair of water and sewer projects
Makes oral and written reports regarding daily progress
Maintains building and grounds housing the water and sewer departments
Assists in other department activities as needed
Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed
Work weekends, holidays and special events as needed
Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or GED; some construction-related experience and plumbing knowledge is preferred; must be able to use hand tools, power tools and other equipment used in the maintenance of water and sewer systems; basic knowledge of materials used in water and sewer systems.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Valid Class C Texas driver license: BCDL with tanker endorsement preferred; must obtain a
Class C water license and Class II wastewater license within three (3) years of employment.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate a computer terminal and city vehicle
  • Walk, stand, or sit, for prolonged periods of time
  • Regularly push, pull, lift, and/or carry up 10 pounds
  • Frequently lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds
  • Occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 100 pounds or more
  • Occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist
  • Operate office equipment including use of a computer keyboard
  • Speak and hear to exchange information in English
  • Operate a vehicle to travel to various locations
