What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-Time Utility Worker - Substations position at City of Lakeland, Civil Service?
This is an entry-level position for high school graduates who have successfully completed the required industry certification at the Lakeland Electric Power/ Energy Academies or Traviss Electricity Program. Positions will be allocated in the utility to prepare future workers where an identified need exists and skills and student goals match. Work is evaluated for overall effectiveness and adherence to safe workplace practices.

- Performs basic level skills as required in the designated position.
- Participates in skills training as appropriate.
- Reads blueprints and diagrams for electrical distribution systems.
- Aids in constructing and maintaining transformers, breakers, and related substation equipment.
- Aids in digging foundations and trenches and installing forms.
- Reads gauges and instruments and logs the information in records.
- Must demonstrate behaviors of commitment, trustworthiness and excellent customer relations.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Position designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Depending on the position, employees may be required to sweep floors, use hand tools, mow lawns, organize inventory, file, answer phones, perform housekeeping duties, and perform other entry-level functions
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Graduate from Lakeland Electric Power/Energy Academies or Traviss Technical College Electricity Program with required industry certification.
- Recommendation from the Lakeland Electric Academies Instructor, Traviss Electricity Program Instructor, or Lakeland Electric Job Shadowing Program Mentor.
- To obtain a full-time Utility Worker position, you must serve six (6) months as a part-time Utility Worker or have six (6) months of experience as an intern or apprentice in the electrical industry.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other competencies necessary for success in the target position may be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Florida driver’s license preferred
- May be required to obtain a CDL license within a designated time period for certain positions
- Must maintain a valid contact phone number
- May be required to attend meetings at locations other than primary work location
- Knowledge of the utility industry, including safety practices, terminology, equipment, and customer service expectations.
- Ability to build successful working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization.

- Ability to learn utility-specific skills based on position assignment Ability to perform physically demanding work (in some positions)
- Ability to properly use hand tools or office equipment appropriate for the position.

- Skill in communicating effectively both verbally and in writing, and to request clarification when needed
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:
- Work involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing, or raising objects and exerting between twenty (20) to fifty (50) pounds of force regularly.
- The job requires the ability to work at heights greater than forty (40) feet.
- The job risks exposure to environmental hazards such as dust, pollen, extreme heat/cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, fumes, moving machinery, and electrical shock.
- The job requires normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
