What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Counselor position at City of Lakeland, Civil Service?
- Organizes, instructs, and supervises various activities, including team and individual games, free play, athletic contests, sporting events, and tournaments.
- Enforces campsite and program rules and regulations, maintains discipline, safeguards against accidents, and instructs children to use equipment safely.
- Provides for issuance and check-in of supplies and equipment; reports hazardous conditions and accidents; and administers first aid when needed.
- Participates in staff meetings, assists in planning special events, and provides information about programs to the general public.
- Assists in cleaning and maintaining the campsite.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs related work as required.
- Position designated Mission Critical by Department Director.
- High School Diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
- Must maintain a valid telephone number.
- Knowledge of the modern methods and techniques of playground and community center planning and various recreational activities suitable for children and adults.
- Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public recreation, child psychology, sociology, and personal health and hygiene.
- Knowledge of first aid methods and necessary safety precautions used in recreation work.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations governing various competitive athletic games, such as softball, basketball, and volleyball.
- Ability to adhere to program standards and objectives, supervise subordinates, maintain control, and solve disciplinary problems.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Requires work that involves running, walking, or standing most of the time and exerting up to 10 pounds of force regularly.
- The job risks exposure to extreme heat, blood-borne pathogens, human waste, and bright/dim light.
- The job requires normal visual acuity, field vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
